I'm Welsh. The story I love telling people is how we often give people names based on who or what they do. For instance, the Welsh name for Davis is Dai (DYE. I Knew a local bobby who was called, Dai book and pencil until he was promoted to Sergeant then he was known as Dai book and Biro, but he was mostly referred to as Dai Book. Google it he's on there. I had an uncle who read Gas Meters, he was Don the Gas. My absolute favourite though was our local chemist (Pharmacist) Mr Preece, called, you guessed it. Preece the Poison. Not unusual do be in the pub and hear someone shouting, Oy Poison, what you drinking? Then again, there was the late, great Welsh Rugby legend Mervyne Davis, universaly loved and admired as Merv the swerve. Hope he is sitting comfortably now at gods right hand, with the rest of the boys who made us so proud.

People in Wales do speak Welsh. The way you approached the Welsh language in that chapter was quite disrespectful, 'where did the vowels go? ' you say, talking about a language which has 2 more vowels than the language you speak yourself. This is why I always avoid Americans wherever I go, always speak as though they're superior to the rest of the world. The videos was quite good up until that point, but if you need to get your cheap little laughs through insulting our language (the oldest language on the isles and an inspiration to Tolkien I might add) then forget it.

What I love most about your videos and your family is that you make the effort to KNOW about the places youre visiting. As an English person I have really appreciated you getting to know England and the UK and the customs and the foods and the best places to visit before making a video about it. Its clear that you dont just visit countries to be a tourist, you go to be immersed in their culture and its fantastic and makes your videos all the more informative! Happy travels Mark & family x

Hello, American here desiring to move to Wales.
Is a car necessary to have living in Wales? I havent driven in years, as I mainly use public trans or Uber, and I have no idea how to drive manual (I intend to learn one day from a friend, but no one I know here has a manual car either.
I assume it would be fine living nearer to a large city or populous area, as there would be public trans there. Is Uber an option there as it is in populous areas here?

I visited Wales in early March, 2017 and loved, Loved, LOVED IT! Yes, we walked a LOT, but even at age 77 at the time, it was do-able. We were planning on going to Scotland in June of 2020, and hoped to make a side trip to Wales, but alas, COVID struck and trip cancelled. Welsh people are great, and in my opinion, even warmer and more welcoming (dare I say) than the Irish. Just remember, though, There be dragons!

Rather than say 'don't bother learning Welsh', I would encourage those who visit to learn a few words. this is always appreciated. Welsh actually has more vowels than English - as well as a e i o u we have y and w. knowing that makes pronunciation one hell of a lot easier! The good news is that you are well informed and sympathetic to Wales, and thanks for your video! Diolch yn fawr!

I should point out Welsh has a perfectly normal complement of vowels, it just doesn't look that way because two of them are represented by 'y' and 'w'. For a really vowel-deficient language, try Georgian.
I'd recommend just listening to Welsh while your there on Radio Cymru, it's a beautiful language to hear even if you can't understand it.

I was in the St. David's area back in the late 1980's. The surprising don't I encountered was tipping. One bartender was definitely insulted by the offer of a tip. I was surprised because in London, they were definitely fine with tips and the shuttle driver even had a handkerchief out for tips.

Yes please lean a bit of Welsh. Many of us would appreciate it. The Welsh language has a long and complicated history. Too long to go into here. Apparently, its the oldest living language in Europe. Thats one reason why some people in Wales are so passionate about keeping it going.
