The weather in the Black Hills is very volatile. It can be in the 50s daytime high in July, or hot as hell. Storms are unpredictable, but July and August are usually more stable with drier weather. A few years ago, we encountered 2 inches of pea sized hail that completely covered the roads in areas in the middle of the summer. It looked like smoking snow from the sublimation.
Another tip, get that LDW insurance from the car rental place. Whether it's the hail or the deer, chances are good something will get the car.

Mount Rushmore is one of the famous sights to see that will not disappoint. If available, try to see the special night program with the historic movie and light show. Ride the little train out of Keystone. Forgot the name of the town at the other end but it has a spiffy dinosaur museum.
In Custer State Park beware of the donkeys that come up and beg like Jellystone Bears.

You should also mention:
Don't go to the reservations, stay far away from them. They're holes full of meth and crime. If they included the crime stats from the reservations the whole states stats would be much higher. Not many seem to know about it. If you look up a reservation map of SD you'll see there are a lot of them.
You've been warned.

It is safe most likely because Marxism has been kept out. The south dakota people seem to be warm & loving, and welcome ALL PEOPLE, unlike wolf-in-sheeps-clothing progressive ideology spread by propaganda. So please examine your news sources carefully, especially if you are shocked at my words. cuz I USED to be you.

Lifetime resident of Sioux Falls, South Dakota (East river. Everything West river is literally ALL about the scenery and outdoors and western vibe. Im not saying its a bad thing, but we have so much more to offer, overall, in Sioux Falls.

SD is basically two states: the eastern side which is made up of farm country, rolling plains and lots of towns, the western side is part of the Western US, wide open spaces, ranching and canyons/badlands, and the Black Hills.

Don't mess with the Buffalo. Last year some lady was trying to get a close up photo of them and one took her for a ride and stole her pants. She was just fine she didn't get hurt. She just lost her pants

To all you folks from the western side of South Dakota. I have a week long vacation planned for the last week of October. How worried should I be about a potential snow storm that could close the roads?

Im from South Dakota and it annoys me that people call Pierre with the french accent. I cant tell you how many British people say it wrong way. And all the British people call it the Dakotas

We visited SD in August oh 1998 I do believe and we had on t-shirts and shorts and even swam that evening. We woke up in the middle of the night and it was snowing like crazy. It was awesome.
