10 Myths People Still Believe about Los Angeles - Wolters World CookingArtGuy: In the seventies and eighties I worshiped New York City. I lived in Southern California as a kid a million years ago, went back a couple of years ago for four nights in LA and three nights in San Francisco. I absolutely am in love with LA and wish I could move there. I know I know, it has problems I get it, but it is the place where I feel most at home. I have never been happier than I was walking the streets by myself, visiting Union Station, The Chateau Marmont, Philippe's, dinner at Musso & Frank's, I realize those are vacation things and that living there is different, but I know I would love to live there. There's something in the air in LA, something spiritual that is nowhere else, at least for me. If I were younger and richer I would move there.

$300 sushi? Go to a Japanese area like South Bay where I'm from and you'll find excellent quality intended for locals. Large Japanese grocery stores usually have well priced food courts and fresh, because you can't eat sushi that's been sitting around for hours without getting sick, packaged sushi. There are local chains of takeout sushi where it's made in front of you and packaged. In Norwalk there are streets full of good South Asian restaurants patronized by local South Asians. My sister-in-law, whose family originally came from southern India gets takeout from a large chain of Indian groceries. Unsurprisingly good Mexican food is everywhere. Just leave the Santa Monica to Hollywood to Downtown to Glendale cocoon and see LA metro area most of us live in.

Los Angeles is more than just the city or LA County. There are five huge counties comprising our meteopolitan urban area. Many sites worth visiting are in Orange County to the south and east. You have to drive to get there. Staying in downtown is both expensive and dangerous. The civic leadership has let the homeless encampments spread throughout the area. It honestly looks like the vision of New York in John Carpenter's Escape from New York. Forget the Covid-19, we have a bubonic plague there no officials want to acknowledge. If your business requires you to stay there just just beware. The locals retreat to enclaves like Koreatown by 9: 00pm. Avoid the streets after then. A lot of the shows you see purporting to travel the area do a lot of editing.

I grew up in So Cal for the better part of 30 years and can absolutely say people can be friendly but most people tend to keep to the people they know. There are definitely neighborhood where everyone knows everyone but i think that is decreasing in general.
Also traffic is as bad or worse than you think. There are a ton of unsafe places in LA, and rent/housing is sky high.
Honestly if you can, leave. The only great things about so cal is the weather and the beach. If thats enough for you to stay great, but if not, leave now!

As an L. A County native, I agree with Chris. While we do have the most random weather, its mostly sunny year round. Also, Anaheim (Disneyland) is a completely different county and a very long drive if you are staying anywhere North of L. A. I live in South L. A close to Long Beach and its a 25 minute drive with no traffic. I couldnt tell you how long it takes with public transportation tho, we all basically drive everywhere.

I was raisedin Los Angeles area (born in Switzerlandz0 today San Francisco must be the most unfriendliest and ruderst city, yes in my experience on living here 10% friendly and really so, but unfortunately this has deteriorated as a city of zombies, very unmannered, uncultered, and very rude! Food is good there, but you don't want the 90% of the people on the menu! Really it has been quite rude and barbarous as well!

Most of these debunked myths are actually myths that are true for parts of Los Angeles, such as the San Fernando Valley. SFV is usually like 10 degrees hotter than downtown, it has bad public transportation as only the North Hollywood area has a metro-line and there's no walkability. Despite this, most parts of SFV are nice and Los Angeles is still a good place to visit

The comment on film production not taking place in Hollywood is false. While there are studios all over LA, including Burbank, yes, Paramount, Sunset Gower, Raleigh Studios, The Lot, and many others are located in Hollywood and have been for a long time. Further, filming on location occurs in Hollywood in multiple locations nearly every day.

Correction about there being no public transportation from LA to Disneyland. There's actually a bus that takes you from LA union station to Disneyland and Knotts. Also don't take Amtrak to Anaheim, too costly. Take the Metrolink train to the Anaheim Transportation Center and from there take the shuttle to Disneyland.

I dont agree with the weather one. Even if we have some cloudy days, the weather is still good in the 70s with some sun. Especially compared to other cities we dont get that freezing freezing cold weather and not much rain. We do actually have good weather pretty much all year long. LA natives will agree
