Barra Airport: Landing on the Beach at the World's Most Stunning Airport!

We did this for 20 minutes.
Someone behind me was crying; someone further back threw up. Another recited The Lord's Prayer. A boy sitting with his mother kept pushing her off of him as he tried to do what we were doing while she clung to him for grim life. When the lights flickered out and back on, everyone was stunned into silence, then I got the kids to laugh and scream and keep going. For me, the most memorable moment was watching the lightning dance around inside of clouds as we flew past. Those pilots were stars. We touched down about 5 minutes before the storm hit the aairport. The 3 children all met their parents at the gate; two boys that were brothers ran to their mother, who was in tears. The captain shook my hand and thanked me for making it fun for the children; I shook his and the co-pilot's and thanked them for giving me the ride of my life! I've never had a wilder plane ride since!

Back in the 80s I flew down to Manchester from Dundee in a Bandeirante. That was open cockpit too - with the luggage held by a net in the aft cabin. On the way over the Lake District, the pilots had am Ordnance Survey map open and were leaning all over the shop peering out. There was a call of Manchester's that way, mate! Turns out the captain had just bought a house near Keswick and they were trying to spot it: ) There was a strong crosswind when we landed and that had one or two passengers panicking as we crabbed in on final approach! Much more fun than hours in a flying toothpaste tube.

worst landing, 50 years ago this month, C-119 military prop, left Bien Hoa heading to Cam Ranh in a monsoon hard rain and wind. Weather was so bad the plane was forced down into Vietnam's rural wildness. We sat in canvas belt seats and my seat belt was already broken. 8 soldiers suffered broken bones, I was thrown across the fuselage but totally uninjured. Helicopter DustOff Rescue could not get to us for three days because of monsoon conditions and we had the misfortune to have landed in a hot war zone. Finally we got out of there. The plane's left wing was stuck in mud about 8 inches deep.

Ive been to Barra I hope you enjoy it there theres loads of sheep and loads of beaches I did get told off by a farmer though we were on the beach and we saw this van and it got loads of wood in it we were just looking in it and he went to try and reported to the police I was only a child then I hasten to add we werent trying to steal anything we were just unsure as to why it was there and then he realised and then he told us what its all about it was to help with the fencing boring story but I thought Id share it with youu

If you like experimenting with unusual flights can I challenge you with the shortest scheduled flight from the island of Westray, Orkney to the nearby island of Papa Westray, courtesy of Loganair, flying Kirkwall - Westray - Papa Westray. Flight time averages 2 mins - less if the wind is behind you) and you even get a certificate. I stayed overnight in a local hostel (no hotel) and had a prebooked meal supplied by a local lady (no cafes.

I remember seeing this landing on Time Team years ago when they did a dig there and the beach landing was amazing. Would love to try it too. Long way from Australia though. Ps Some people perhaps need some Valium or meditation before they get onto a plane. Went through a frightening experience once flying with Garuda and no one carried on like that.

Craziest landing Ive ever had was on a Ryanair 737 - 800 into Bergerac, France. The runway there is only just long enough for a 737 and the pilot absolutely melted the brakes while trying to stop the aircraft. Resulted in a rough landing and a 15 minute wait onboard the aircraft while the brakes cooled

Glasgow always feels like home, I lived there for 5 years before moving, even now living in England we have never flown out of an airport in England we usually take a train to Glasgow Airport its really pretty when it snows. I love and miss Scotland so much: )

Noel, did you know this particular aircraft is named Spirit of Eilidh as a tribute to 14 year old Eilidh MacLeod from Barra, who sadly passed away during the Manchester bombing. If you look back to around the 4: 40 mark, youll see it on the side of the aircraft

It's a shame so many people in the comments on this video are total jerks. Everyone has something that unsettles them, flying is it for this woman. Two of my relatives have died in separate plane crashes so to some people Chances are. is irrelevant.

Another interesting video.
Re using the Land Rover to light the runway, that's quite common here in the more remote parts of Australia. There have even been occasions when the airstrip has been lit up with burning toilet rolls.

I was on Barra last year. Watching the planes landing and taking off was amazingly surreal. I also had 2 days sunbathing on the gorgeous beaches as it was 26 degrees. I couldnt believe how lucky I was as this is very unusual I think.

I understand people get nervous but it is so thoughtless for someone to announce were all gonna die on a plane. It spreads panic among everyone. Like those silly people who cant help but squeal every time theres a bump of turbulence.

I used to work at GLA for Alpha Flight services, we used to deliver 2 small bags of snacks for the captain and first officer on the Twin Otter, I remember they would hose down the landing gear to wash the sand off at GLA.

I would love to make this flight. As a small-carrier fan, I'd be squealing in sheer delight rather than fear. Beach landing sounds so cool. But I'd want to stay on Barra & explore for a few days

Yea Scotland is absolutely stunning, if only it weren't that cold all year round.
Fun Fact: Newfoundland and Nova Scotia both were directly physically connected to today's Scotland at some point!

Having worked in both the Hebrides and the Caribbean I can confirm (minus the temperature) they are very similar looking sometimes, I'd take the Hebrides any day over the Bahamas though.

Ahh! Memories. I lived on this wee island for over 3 years and am due back there for a couple of weeks holiday next week. Been on many a flight to and from the mainland during my time there.

Do they fly the Islander out there? I like the twin otter just fine. But I LOVE the islander. Never had any other aircraft save my ass so many times. Both as a pilot and passenger.
