South african airways is trash, used to be one of the best airlines in the world, before the goverment made it into a free for all for stealing money, was bankrupt a few times, right now a shadow of its former self, and flight crews been fired and replaced and rehired so many times that its almost comical, so for them to tell you to stop and then apologize and then say how awesome you are because your famous is typical of them, I just ignore them anyway, not worth paying attention to them when it comes to something as innocent as filming anyway, not like they can stop people from filming with their phones or a hidden camera in glasses anyway. just another useless rule told to useless cabin crew members of a trashy and defunct and worthless airline of a failed african state, that used to be something, and is now just a goverment run stealing service that operatesan an airline, when are you doing El AL Noel

Being South African, the story of the SAA is one that leaves a very bitter after taste in my mouth. As a boy, I remember them being one of the best in the world. After 1995, it did quite ok, and hopes were high that it would continue, but after 2008, the airline nosedived financially. It became members of government’s and their family's private airline for free flights all over the world.
Right now, the airline is bankrupt. It has so much debt, it is unlikely that they will ever get out of it. The only reason the airline still exist is due to national pride. It will be political suicide for our ruling government if the airline that carries our national flag as to go belly up.
Right now, they are trying hard to succeed and I wish them all the best, but personally I think it is a bit too late.

Two things I wanted to mention:
First, there is no way that you could call this an accurate review of South African Airlines. You could tell the service you were about to receive by the employee attitudes you were getting before they recognized you. That seriously pisses ME off and I guarantee you that if I fly South African Airlines, the first thing I will do is start filming everything, and if they say one word to me about it I will emphatically state, Well, you let Noel Philips do it! and see what they have to say about that!
The other thing I wanted to mention is that it is really obvious by reading your comments that everyone agrees that you should come out with another video of either you and Josh, or you and your family. I also agree with that. So, when’s it going to be, Noel

Hmm. got to like how the Cabin Crew lady did not at first recognise Noel, come on Noel even had a Noel Philips T-shirt on! And how many bald, ginger You Tube airline et al content creators/vloggers are there, who also wear glasses and is 6' 4 ( apologies if I got your height wrong Noel ) I wonder if someone else pointed out to her, who Noel is and then the reason for a change of attitude As did not want the airline getting a bad review plastered all over social media makes you wonder doesn't it! Or was it just a honest mistake Who knows, great video again Noel as always: ) Keep up the cracking work you do, to show us all these airlines and places you visit around the world, as well as trains, ferries and ships etc.

As someone who has flown on many of SA’s older, now defunct, airlines (Mango, 1time, Kulula etc, it is good to see SAA making a comeback, but they certainly need to improve. Sad really, as back in the day, I always found SAA to be really good in terms of service and reliability. My worst experiences were flying on Kulula, with delays and cancellations being commonplace. My recent SA internal flights have all been with Safair, and I found that they certainly filled in the void left by the failed airlines, and have not had a bad flight with them so far. Great video Noel!

I have to say that I can understand the no filming on the plane as they don't know what you gonna do with the footage. Unfortunately there are also trolls who abuse it. Knowing a fair person is filming who is not abusing the footage, I would understand. When I'm flying I don't like it when someone is filming and not knowing what will happen with it. And be honest, when you have to fight in the air not to put a camera in someone elses face, It's easier to avoid on forhand.

Hey again Noel, I am still stuck in hospital and am still enjoying your videos, one of my doctors is actually South African and I called him in to watch a bit of this, he said you got SO SO lucky that she let you on with that bag, as SAA are usually pretty damn strict in all matters passenger related, so you certainly are a world class sweet talker my friend, take care (I love travelling vicariously with you, nice to escape from this bloody place, If only virtually)

The staff behavior is not weird. When you walk onto a flight with a camera recording away it puts some people off (staff and passengers alike, even though it's in public and legal in many places that's not the point. When they realized you were a seasoned creator and not just some random Tom, Dick or Harry of course they changed their tune.
Begs the question, why not just pre-declare to airlines ahead of time that you will be recording

That flight attendant, she tried but everything went pear shaped for her, didn't it lol First, she didn't recognize Noel Philips while he was wearing a t-shirt that says Noel Philips, then had a solid flight making up for it but only to have him leaving the plane thinking she called him an a hole: D: D: D bad day lol

As a South African, I won't fly on the Resurrected Dodo ever again. Bad treatment by SAA cabin and airport crew, ensured that I prefer Airlink, CemAir and FlySafair for local flights. Once the world's #1 airline, SAA needs a new compass and a new CEO to pilot them. I rather walk.

SAA is a shadow of it's former self, luckily other SA airlines are a lot better.
SAA is bittersweet for South Africans, uses to be worth it with top pilots and hosts.
They still have these but smaller and less effective than before. Cost tax payers billions with a negetive ROI

I'm a South African and used to fly SAA a lot for my work at the time. I haven't flown with SAA since about 2010. They are under business rescue and I know that they have cancelled many routes and retrenched many pilots.
For local flights I'd rather use Safair or Airlink.

When I recently tried filming on a KLM flight, there was an announcement that no filming was allowed without written permission from the airline, crew, and passengers. I had never heard that before, but then again on an Air France flight I heard it again.

lucky you did not have powercuts in Harare airport. I sat an hour in the dark. With SAA I had the same experience from Jo'Burg to Lilongwe. She was only nice when she saw i was sitting in business class. Quite strange behaviour!

The meal did look good Noel. Great insight on how they all the sudden recognized and allowed filming. I would have let them know departing the plane that all shud be able to film as long as your not filming others which you do not.
