Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide In this program, we follow in the footsteps of 19th-century aristocrats along Nice's Promenade des Anglais. Then we listen to the graceful reshuffling of personal fortunes at the casino in fairy-tale Monaco, and visit the picturesque artist hangouts of Chagall, Matisse, and Picasso. 2004 Rick Steves' Europe

Roman Holiday During the Roman Empire, life was centered on the hill behind Nice, in Cimiez which is now the chic residential quarter. Head up to the Jardins de Cimiez today and youll find the ancient Roman coliseum, which once entertained with gladiators, the ruins of an immense Roman bath complex, a 500-year-old olive grove, and a still-operating monastery.

My parents moved to Nice after their retirement in 1987. After a while, I stopped visiting them in the summer. I just couldn't stand this overcrowded coast. I much prefer the Atlantic coast, Bretagne, the Bay of Arcachon and the long straight beaches down to Biarritz.

The Mediterranean region is probably as close to heaven on earth you can get! Florida, California, and so many other places try their hardest to imitate it.

Thank you Rick, enjoyed your company! So long to go back to the French Riviera, but as that's not possible, this little trip with you was worth a lot.

I'm surprised that he didn't mention that the Nice beach is not so nice on which to lay down. The rocks shocked me when I went there.
