Lucca, Italy: Beautifully Preserved Hywel: Lucca is a real gem, and Rick is right to highlight it. Slightly off the main tourist track, and all the better for it. I visited around 15 years ago, and was impressed by the relaxed ambiance and the beauty of the city and surrounding countryside. At that time it was notable for high end (but not flashy) pen, stationery and watch shops.

My grandfather was born in Lucca. At the age of 19 he went to war (WWII, he was kept as a prisoner for more than two years. After that he emigrates to Argentina.
In a few months we are going to travel thru Europe, and we will visit the home of my grandpa L. Guidotti.

Lucca is really a fascinating and dreamlike city. Last year we had to end our pilgrimage on the Via Francigena. But this year we will continue there and I am looking forward to seeing Lucca again. Just like the pilgrimage, I am looking forward to see the city again.

Beautiful city, captivating history, and world-class musicians. Also, i'd love to get a panorama view of Lucca whilst standing on the Torre del'Ore!
