Another advantage to sharing the cost of a private guide with other travelers or another couple is that you help the local economy. When you take the cruise ship's tour, you further enrich the big cruise ship companies. This has been a growing issue in many popular cruise ship ports, where they bring enormous crowds and the challenges of that, without bringing a commensurate stimulation of the local economy. If you can afford to hire a local, please do. Especially now that the pandemic has had such an enormous impact on communities that rely on tourism. If you want those charming places to remain charming and have B&B's and restaurants to enjoy, they need you to spend money there. Happy trails, everyone!

Thanks for this! It was a lovely flashback to my visit to Greece in '97. I went to Mykonos and Delos. Rather than touring around I decided to just hang out. Mykonos was so fun and beautiful.
