Building an Iron Age House by Hand: Celtic Roundhouse Bushcraft Camp (PART 7)

We continue using ancient medieval building techniques to build our iron age celtic roundhouse. This time we focus on the interior walls, using the traditional wattle and daub technique. The daub being a mix of clay, straw, ash and water. We mix it together and put it on the wall by hand. With the walls almost complete, the next step will be to reinforce the roof ready for thatching. We then cook handmade pizza over the fire in a dutch oven

The celts definitely had something similar to a clay oven as alot of celtic towns would have dedicated buildings for a specific purpose. Theres a really great place up in scotland that has the remains of an old celtic town which they have rebuilt and they have a clay oven!

Honestly, you should keep the long rafters to extend out the thatch. The roundhouses had thatch that extended up to a meter out from the walls to keep them dry. Extra bracing across them would help you extend that thatch well

Yeah, you should build a pizza oven. Throughout history in all parts of the world, cooking was done in such ovens. Who knows, maybe even the Celts had something like that. And it will make an awesome video.

My son is allergic to most woods. Another idea to lift food up in your dutch is a folding steamer basket, remove the lift hook and flatten a little. I cut a circle of parchment too

Hey guys - on the pizza oven theme - you should check out a book by Kiko Denzer on building a clay oven. i built one here in Somerset from local clay - a great oven
