WW2 Bunker Rennovation - Building the Escape Hatch (PART 7)

I continue rennovating the abandoned ww2 bunker that is in my back garden. In part 7 we focus on building the escape hatch. The bunker never had a hatch previously, it just had a concrete slab on top with an air gap. But I figured it would have been better to have a backup exit if things were going down! So now that the escape ladder was built, it made sense to build a folding escape hatch in the air vent shaft. Stay tuned for more world war 2 bunker updates soon!

Get some 12mm rebar bend it to a U shape then get an sds drill masonry bit 15mm and drill holes 100mm in the wall and get some chemical resin squirt it in the holes and insert the steps, they will take any weight, why don't you make an upstand frame arround the top skylight and buy a solar panel as a lid and you will have a power source aswell?

Don't worry about a hinge system on the plate. Just cut Vs in the corners and bend. Then you'll have an insert that fits nicely and flush. Just pool out when you need to drop the sump in there. Saves on more hardware and you just need some tin snips or aviation sheers. Great job so far.

The space where you are sitting, you could build a slide window there with a plastic window and a screen, where you could slide the window to one side when you are in it, to allow air flow, something like that, maybe. Make it part of the hatch, but sits in the space flush.

If you dig the sump hole deeper you could leave the pump in there permanently connected to a power supply & a hose outlet then it would come on automatically & the bunker would never flood, you could also use an ice-cream tub or the like as a sump liner.

If you're REALLY worried about people dropping grenades down the airshaft, this is what they teach us in the American army when we dig a fox hole. When some one drops a grenade in on you, just kick it into the sump hole. oops. Never mind.
