I always wondered: Does anyone really enjoy it when servants stand there in a line, with wide, fake smiles on their faces, greeting you and telling you how much they are looking forward to pampering you? Maybe it is because I'm German and the whole serving thing isn't really part of German culture, which is why Germany is such a service desert and tourists always are horrified how rude and unmotivated service in Germany is, but I find such interactions really awkward and unpleasant. I can't be alone with that. There is a reason for why there are dividers in luxury limousines, so people getting driven around in them don't need to interact with the driver. As I said, I'm just curious whether some people really like getting this fake, paid for attention from others and can look past the fact that that servant would surely rather be doing something else with their life. I think the best service would be one where you never see the service provider and I doubt that I am the only one thinking like that. That doesn't mean that I dislike the service personell, or disrespect them, or look down on them. Quite the opposite. I think the fact that some people need to serve others is a necessary evil and it would be best for the dignity of the one who finds themselves in the role of the servant, to keep it as distant, un-personal and clinical as possible. Sure, I want the beds made and the room clean as much as the next guy, but the thought of watching the people who do it, or even interacting with them on a I'm the boss and you are the servant-level, is super uncomfortable to me. I know I would hate every second of being a servant and I have to assume other people feel the same way about it.
