I just measured the width of the roads I'm used to here in Germany, in a city with about 500, 000 residents. All of the measurements include sidewalks, bike lanes, green spaces and medians.
The main road through the city is 21m or a little less than 69ft, two lanes per direction with a planted median and 2m (6. 5ft) sidewalks on both sides. The median gets narrower on intersections to allow for dedicated turning lanes. In some parts of the city the median also gets narrower in favor of fitting bike lanes.
The average collector road is about 12m (40ft) wide with one lane in each direction and the same width sidewalks. Parking is generally allowed on both sides, reducing the actual lane count to one, resulting in the queuing you mentioned. Some may have narrower sidewalks to accomodate trees to create a buffer or to fit parking pockets. The local roads are maybe 8. 5m (28. 5ft) wide and the same setup as the collectors, just with narrower lanes and/or sidewalks depending on the area and if there's trees or not.
So 69ft arterials, 40ft collectors and 28. 5ft local roads over here.
50ft for a local road is incomprehensible, even when taking into account how wide your vehicles are over there. If an older neighborhood has those wide roads I think it is a very good idea to use that space to fit trees and maybe dedicated pockets of parking space in between the trees but why would you build such massive roads in the first place.

This proposed street design is great for neighborhoods however, I can think of a few more improvements:
Grade level roads (1): bringing the roads up to the same level as the sidewalks can make drivers even more uncomfortable with driving fast, nevermind the fact that the curb isn't stopping an F350 going at 15 mph anyway, it also allows the roads to be even skinnier as you don't need to permanently dedicate enough space for larger emergency vehicles to get by.
Uneven roads (2): uneven roads or just slightly bumpy roads in general can greatly improve the uncomfortability of drivers, along with marking a clear area of where the cars should be if there are any, considering that the road will be on the same level as the sidewalks, I'd say gravel is a great cheap material whilst bricks are much better but cost more, the sidewalks could also be made out of bricks given it's a different color than the road as bricks won't get as hot as concrete does.
With these 2 additions onto your already existing design it'll make roads far more comfortable for the residents that live there and will (almost) remove any thru traffic, I can see parents being much more willing to let there kids play unsupervised outdoors with streets like this proposal, what do you think

I think this is a good volume 1, but I hope you'll make a volume 2. Some things you didn't include: woonerf style designs (both in the Netherlands and Japan) where there's no separation between car-travel and walking space; day-lighting of intersections; uses of streets that are not for transportation like kids sports, block parties and other gatherings; finally, consideration for storm-water drainage--both because this is where design changes are often ultimately determined (we can't change the road because this is where the gutters need to be) and because the incorporation of diversions for plantings is an important consideration. For the last one, see Brad Lancaster's work in Arizona. I raise this because I used to live on a 35ft wide street in Cambridge, MA surrounded by apartment buildings, which had ADA sidewalks on both sides and basically the narrowest 2-way allowed with 12 parked cars. I suggested a more open mixed street design to the planning folks (in 2015) and they looked at me like I had three heads. Today the street is largely identical, a new road surface with room for 12 parked cars and not a lot else.

The Earth is literally infiltrated with them everywhere. I just watched a travel blog of Bali and it just looks so gross the amount of cars that they have imported on that island. I really feel like it’s one of the worst inventions that we ever came up with. It just looks so gross and seeing a neighborhood with cars parked on both sides of the street. it’s just so unpleasant.
And I would never buy a house without a sidewalk. I see that in new developments here in Florida people are buying $1 million houses with no sidewalk. And they’re walking their dogs in the street like do people not realize that walking should be a fundamental right you should be able to walk to the store walk to the bus stop OMG these are not suburbs on the middle of nowhere. These are developments that are in a city. Americans really need a wake up call

In the same 50' (I meant feet, not inches! LOL, I managed to incorporate two light rail, two bike lanes, two rows of trees, and two sidewalks. There doesn't need to be two car lanes. The one-way car lane is not an inconvenience when the direction alternates every other street. Changing direction is only two left turns or two right turns away, making it the safest u-turn ever. Streetmix estimates this would transport 90, 000 people per hour. I could replace both light rail lanes for a car lane and a streetcar lane, and still get 73, 500 per hour. If you want parking, put it in the backyard with a narrow driveway alley that leads to garages. For emergency vehicles, they merely have to mount the curb (this would require adding mounting points that only large emergency trucks could physically access) and use the bike lane for the needed extra width. Or, the emergency vehicles can take up some space in the streetcar lane when necessary. The Streetmix code for the one-way car lane and street car is 3474747.

However, some amount of green space is needed between the street and sidewalk for trees and safety as well as in front of the home to prevent the neighborhood from feeling too urban. An alleyway helps divert local traffic off the main traffic way and provides parking and garage space. Con: detached garage. Pro: detached garage helps to enclose the backyard and provide privacy. It is important to have a driveway in the alley; also to prevent the space from feeling too urban. Base street/neighborhood planning in general to a grid system to keep civil engineering efficient and main roads from becoming overwhelmed.

9: 16 is supposed to make it look idyllic and fine to bike on a road lined with parked cars, but I don’t want to bike there as an adult. the cars obscure my vision of potential hazards that could enter my path and of the beauty of the neighborhood architecture and trees, it divides me from any neighbors that may be outside that I could have said hi to, and I don’t want to bike in constant dooring zones. Cars are not what I’m there to see if I’m out for a bike in my neighborhood. You’ve designed a street that’s better than most NA suburbs, but it’s still car-centric. A perfect street centers people.
What I expected this video to say is that cars should be routed behind houses onto car access roads, and the actual front neighborhood streets should be narrow and cozy and built for people’s full freedom without having to even think about cars.

I moved to Miami Beach in the 90s. I lived on Meridian Avenue which was a tree line Street I believe they were rubber trees and a very thick canopy. There always seemed to be a cool breeze blowing up the street I walked most places. I often walk down Euclid Avenue. After a while I realized they were the same exact street except Euclid had no trees. It was Sun bleached and hot. It ends up the city was very much against planting trees along the street and I never understood why. Meridian Avenue was such a pleasant Street.
You have to wonder who makes the decisions sometimes.
Somebody said that the tree line streets have more accidents I don't know how true that was.
One winter we had a bad Frost and all the trees lost all their leaves which never happened since I lived there. It was a profound difference for at least a year but they came back.

The website you showed is very car first, because it assumes that all modes must be separated.
Up until the car arrived in masses, it was never this way.
Streets were for all, people walking, riding a horse, cycling, taking a tram, pushing a cart etc.
Only due to car centric planning and the danger of cars did planners start separating everything for everything else for 'safety'.
But it's really just a way of letting cars have their way.
The best street is one where it is made for walking, where driving or cycling fast feels unnatural and even slightly dangerous, because it makes people slow down and the place feels human.
This should be reflected in the design.

It seemed like you complained about American streets, and then designed the perfect street to look like the streets that we already have. You even made the sidewalks wider, making for more pavement. Compared to your perfect street, many streets are just like that, some are narrower, some are wider, and some have side walks and others don't. The European streets you showed were from a different type of neighborhood altogether, i. e. urban neighborhoods. The streets looked too narrow, and they were clogged with a lot of cars. We have some streets like that -- Somerville, MA comes to mind. It's hard to get around in Somerville, especially in winter when there's snow. There's just nowhere for the snow to go. It has to be trucked out.

Every suburban street I've ever lived on has had a sidewalk. The classic stereotypical suburb always includes kids walking to school and none of that vision has those kids walking in the street to do it. Sidewalks are what separate the suburbs from rural areas. I really think you're WAY out of line with this assertion. I understand that you grew up on a street without sidewalks, but look at the clips and stock footage you've included, the streets have sidewalks. the street of your youth is not typical.

My street is a lot like this. Approximately 45 feet wide with 10 foot sidewalks on either side (so 25 feet of asphalt street. Tree planters sprinkled throughout the sidewalks. Street parking on both sides. It's terrible. If there's a delivery vehicle in the wrong spot, I can't even leave my house. Speeds are slow, I guess, though I still don't feel safe walking or biking in the street. The sheer amount of cars on the street also limits visibility. The traffic is not low due to the number of cars. Nearly every house has 2 or more cars. One side of the street is town homes, so density is a little higher than the average suburban neighborhood. It's uncomfortable for driving, cycling, AND walking.

I think you could make a case for collecting the cars just outside the neighborhood and having modal filters for emergency vehicles. Then you've designed the most human-centric local street where kids and families are free to use the communal space as they wish outside of emergencies.
This has the added benefits of creating a perfect location for a public transit connection, and allowing a household on that local street to opt out of car-dependent designs (garage, driveway) if they want.
A sort of compromise could be to limit car traffic to one-ways only. Then you can have a single lane and still use most of the right-of-way for greenspace, bike & foot paths, playgrounds, etc.

People can advocate for better urban planning, public transport, density zoning, etc; without car bashing and America bashing, like you somewhat did here in this video. America is a different country with different habits and different population dispersion. We can't just copy Europe. That's why a compromise somewhere between American and European style is the best idea for creating perfect, beautiful neighborhoods with taking everyone into consideration. Density Urban zones are the natural state of market evolution; If not for regulations, most of the Housing construction will occur in urban areas Very densely Co located near businesses and industries where people work.

My street is 26 ft wide not including the gutter plan, two way, parking on both sides, and is a through street with more than a minimal local traffic load. It works fine at those dimensions. Usually vehicles will wait in open spots with no parked cars to pass each other, but tough. It's in a neighborhood and one can drive slowly for a couple blocks.
The same street in new development would have to be 36 ft wide.
Another not-so-fun fact about planning requirements is that even though alleys have made somewhat of a comeback (so that garages can be placed in the rear, they are often required to pass two-way traffic, so they are really just streets with no parking.

But since it ends in a culdesac which prevents through traffic there is rarely much traffic anyway. Even though they would be nice to have, the lack of sidewalks isn’t that big of a problem with such little traffic and it’s usually pretty safe for pedestrians and cyclists to share the same space as cars. Sometimes simpler is better with these streets because it means different users have to slow down and make conscious decisions.

An ideal local street 30' wide, lined with 90' tall North American Elms. Luckily until 2 years ago I had that! So much nicer in summer when its 40c. You could still snag a 50' x 120' lot and house there for below $180K USD/$250K CAD though at that price most were snapped up for medium density redevelopment since anyone can put up to 8 units on a mid-block former single-family lot since that designation was done away with entirely. Which is why most replacements are either bougie San Fran Painted Lady style skinny houses on 25' lots with basement units and ADU's or a Fourplex with above garage granny suites with shared indoor/outdoor parking out back.

Is the next video going to be adding the crucial third dimension! In many suburban subdivisions, a bumpout on either side of the driveway can create a traffic calming condition, extend the driveway apron so the sidewalk can remain level rather than dip with slant of the driveway apron, provide planting space for trees on at least one side of the driveway, which adds shade to the on-street parked cars, provides some vertical protection for those cars & the adjacent property improvements, creates more comfortable temperatures to reduce cooling load while making walking more comfortable, even just to a shaded car.

The street i live on looks a lot like the perfect street only two differences.
One, we only have one driving lane for both ways, with parking on either side
And two, our sidewalks are three feet.
Also worth mentioning that our driveways connect to a back alley, like in King of the Hill. So the front of our houses is all yard.
Id love to see small (like 4-6ft deep) bump outs every 200 feet or so. My street is long, and loops around to become the street behind. These bump outs will help keep speeds low, and give a good spot to cross. Also gives fire hydrants plenty of clear space.

Id love to see small (like 4-6ft deep) bump outs every 200 feet or so. My street is long, and loops around to become the street behind. These bump outs will help keep speeds low, and give a good spot to cross. Also gives fire hydrants plenty of clear space.

Despite the fact that I am so against car dependent infrastructure in the US, I do think it's important to have on street parking and neighborhood streets at least to some extent.
Why
Because we are not a car-free society and we are decades away from that if we ever get there at all. Being able to store a couple personal vehicles in your driveway or even one personal vehicle in your driveway is great, but if you want to have friends or family over odds are several of them will drive, and I think it's important to have a bit of overflow capacity for those intermittently used situations.
