AMARILLO: What I Saw SHOCKED Me - Much Of The City's Center Is In Decay I wonder how much of that has been the result of Highway expansion and tourist traffic never going thru the city. I remember back in the 1980s I used to travel to the Valley for business and I used to go thru the Town of Alice Tx, but I was always in a hurry, so I never stopped, and I said to myself, man, when I have time, Im coming here for a few days and check this town. It seemed to be hustling with business and it was a small and beautiful little town. Forward 45 years later, I finally retired, and decided to finally go to Alice, Texas. When I got there, I was very surprised and sad at the same time. The town looked totally different. No longer the hustling and buzzing, it looked more like a ghost town. The Downtown area had many abandoned buildings, hardly any stores open. I realized very quickly that an extension of Hwy 281 around Alice may have been the cause of its doom. Only the locals go thru town now. Travelled many miles for a big disappointment. I hope someday it goes back to what it once was,

I just spent the last year going all over the country trying to find an affordable place to live and I've been so disappointed I went to Arkansas Bentonville area and I went to Tulsa Oklahoma and then I went to Medford Oregon and now I'm going back to Florida because it's pretty much 1400 hours anywhere that I've been for a decent apartment 12 to 14 with bills and it's just crazy I can't believe you guys have apartments for $500 is this real Maybe I'll save my money and I'll come back and pay it 2 years rent at once and just finished school I wish I could finish school I can't cuz I work all the time because all I can never do is work because we live in America and America starting to suck cuz you can't even afford life oh and gas was under $3 a gallon here too I couldn't believe it

Amarillo by mornin'
Up from San Antone
Everything that I got
Is just what I've got on
When that Sun is high
In that Texas sky
I'll be buckin' at the county fair
Amarillo by mornin'
Amarillo I'll be there
They took my saddle in Houston
Broke my leg in Santa Fe
Lost my wife and a girlfriend
Somewhere along the way
But I'll be lookin' for eight
When they pull that gate
And I hope that
Judge ain't blind
Amarillo by mornin'
Amarillo's on my mind
Amarillo by mornin'
Up from San Antone
Everything that I got
Is just what I've got on
I ain't got a dime
But what I've got is mine
I ain't rich
But Lord, I'm free
Amarillo by mornin'
Amarillo's where I'll be
Amarillo by mornin'
Amarillo's where I'll be

If you think downtown Amarillo is bare. venture yourself on down South to Lubbock and check out what is left of downtown. While you are downtown, go over to the Great Plains Life building. tallest building on the South plains and go to the southwest corner. Put your back on the corner of the building and then look straight up and notice the building. It is twisted and slightly leaning from the effects of the tornado of 1970. I grew up in Lubbock and would ride my bicycle to town just to watch the men working on and building the 20 story Great Plains Life building. After I graduated from Lubbock High School in 1966. it was exactly as Mac Davis sings it. Lubbock in the rear view mirror. I was outta there.

The city manager Jared Miller resigned just recently and left his position with 730, 000 plus severance pay and the old mayor Ginger Nelson left the city without cleaning up the city. Have you drove through SAN JACINTO Oh, you haven't seen that, I am sure you would be shocked. The leadership allows trash not to get picked up for months. Its disgusting how affordable housing has gone downhill. Renters mixed with homeowners in SanJacinto and houses that are so old they need to be demolished but don't get demolished. Unsafe empty houses. Old renters houses look rotted on the outside because they cant afford paint to paint their homes and rent to anybody who are trashy and don't mow. Its disgusting.

1967 I was done working with my uncle custom combining crew and was waiting for a bus at the amirrillo bus station when I noticed a rather large man standing at the magazine rack. He looked like he could be someone famous like a sports star. So I went over to meet him. I was just 16 yrs old. Well I ask him who he was and he said, well son they call me the Brown Bomber, Name is Joe Lewis, I'm the heavy weight champion of the world. Well I almost pee'd my self, I had never met a famous person. Well he had to go catch his bus and with his 5 times bigger than mine, he shook my hand and said: Remember these three things son, Be yourself, Trust in God, Fight like hell I'll never forget it

I have driven through Armidillo for a lot of years. It is like the place I live in now. A Ghost town after they took out Norton AFB back in 1994. The only thing in Armidillo as I call it was a truck stop and a trucker bar. Back in its day it was the number one stop for truckers to stop at due to that bar that had the best country music in the US, plus trucker parking. I am a former truckers wife. I have been back and forth across the US more times than I care to count. Today I use Armidillo for gas and jump back into the Mustang and head up to Clinton, Ok for the night. Thanks for sharing all your adventures. Slowly getting through each of your video's.

McKinney is a suburb of Dallas, it isn't fair to compare a city metro approaching 7 million with a small city of Amarillo with a metro of 300 thousand. Amarillo is the Queen City of the Panhandle, drawing commercial activity from throughout the Panhandle whose population is around 700 thousand. Those living in the Panhandle do drive two to three hours to shop at a department store better than Walmart. But the key to Amarillo growth is the stockyards as well as the junction of a few major railroads: Santa Fe, Burlington ( Ft. Worth & Denver, and Rock Island. Not to mention being a city on America's Highway, US-66.

It is really sad to see all these cool old downtowns and little towns just fading away and dying off because no one can afford to live in them anymore because there aren't any jobs and then they go to the big cities and they can't really afford to live there because it's too expensive so I don't know what we need to do but we need to reorganize our infrastructure all across the United States and we need to have companies going to be smaller towns to provide jobs so people can afford to live there and keep their families there and America doesn't completely die off just being ruined

Amarillo has a great looking downtown however vacant. Kinda sad. All those beautiful brick streets-wow! Had no idea what the city looked like but always heard bad things.
Ya know I love history and historical architecture. You wouldn’t believe how many people built those magnificent ostentatious mansions died soon after completion or with a few years. Same as many plantations in the south. They didn’t get to enjoy these homes for long. I’d be curious to know about the ridiculously large home in your video.
Thanks once again!

A lot of us younger Generations want a place that smaller and more community-oriented and they want to live in like cool little town they just don't have the opportunities there so if you can make the opportunities for jobs and people can Regent the buildings and save these old buildings and their can be smaller driving communities which will help people not to be so sad and depressed and will help people to have healthier Lifestyles because they have connections with people because they're in smaller towns

I passed thru there via greyhound in the mid 00s. The parts I saw were pretty run down and idk how to explain it but everything felt like it had a layer of dust on it the greyhound station was one of the most run down I ever saw and those familiar with greyhound know that’s saying something.
Funny enough the bus driver we had out of Amarillo assaulted one of elderly women on our bus and when we got to OKC the police were waiting and arrested him before he could even make it off the bus

Average household income of $50, 000 and yet the rents are like $500 I was literally just driving through on my way back to Florida and I almost just went to get an apartment cuz I was like that isn't heard of but I don't know where I'd work cuz apparently there is a new job but hey you guys we got remote jobs the rents are only five to six hundred dollars for a studio apartment that's crazy and they look so nice too I was like what

Don't judge Amarillo by the Sunday activity in the downtown area. Plenty is going on in Amarillo, but it is not going on in the downtown area on a Sunday morning. We love Amarillo and everything it has to offer. Amarillo is a hub for all the small towns surrounding our city. Don't compare us to other cities and please try to ditch that superior tone in your voice.

Growing up in Amarillo and McKinney area at the same time (Farmersville, we spent all our time in McKinney. also divorced parents, McKinney was way better. That was in the 90's and early 2000's though. I haven't even been to Amarillo since 2014, doesn't look like I have missed much except the ridiculous crime rate increase.

Okay call center headquarters you have an affordable place to go build your business and they need jobs in that town so if you could pay them all like 15 16 dollars an hour to work at the call center it will provide jobs and then people could have affordable rent and it would be helpful so get on it

At 41: 05 it looks like there used to be a river there long ago that carved up small canyons in the land. If there was water near by, it could be a place to store energy by pumping water behind a hydroelectric dam there with excess renewable energy using it when there's a shortage.

Well, it looks a hell of a lot better than California cites, with homeless encampments and people crapping on the sidewalks. I'll take Amarillo. Why would anyone be downtown on Sunday, anyway I am totally puzzled why you expect anything else on a Sunday morning.

I travel all around Texas for my job. Amarillo is one of my stops. Friends there - really great people there. And some of the greatest pizza at 575. Did you see the baseball stadium downtown Sodpoodles! Oh and go out to Palo Duro Canyon too - beautiful.

um so pantex isn’t a thing we are really concerned about. We know it’s there but we trust in the people who work there. If something happens like an explosion, it will be immediate and it’s not like we will even know it happened until wellyou know

Not sure if anyone told you about the mansion you were impressed with but that house belonged to the Bivins. Also the traffic you were hearing while walking through downtown was more then likely from the 4 streets that run from the dumas highway to I-27.

My sister lives in McKinney. I almost moved there from Southern California. Great little town, but property tax is higher there than where I live in South Orange County. Simply ridiculous. The weather is better where I live. all year long.

That city doesn't look so bad. I think you should be less rude to your wife, she just wanted to have some fun and all you could do is call her names. You have a beautiful wife and you are fortunate to have one. I usually enjoy your videos.

Was born and raised in Rillo moved away in 2015. The only time downtown was hopping was when I was a little kid in the 80s. Thank you for showing me my hometown, I was feeling homesick this evening lol.

Well, Joe, you seem correct that Amarillo is not a pristine paradise.
However, compared to other cities in the U. S. (and in the world,
Amarillo actually looked better than most others.

I live in Amarillo, and everything is closed on Sunday. You should learn about a city before you open your mouth and assume things. our downtown is pretty busy on Friday and Saturday.

West and Southwest part of town.

I'm disappointed that you didn't show some scenes from inside Palo Duro.
Did you really just drive to the entrance and then drive away

That stately building was the Herring Hotel. Very prominent family in Amarillo. It’s been vacant for over thirty years! Not sure why.
