EAST TEXAS: Quiet Rural Towns Far Off The Interstate Just FYI, you skipped over New London which is super important to American history. The New London School explosion caused the federal regulation that requires a smell to be artificially put into natural gas. Prior gas had no smell and caused the massive explosion that killed hundreds of kids and adults. Also, Walter Cronkite made his first National report on radio from the explosion site thus catching national attention that kick started his major newscaster’s career.
Hope you go back sometime and see the museum and beautiful tribute statute there.
Yes, Sandy Duncan (and her parents) were born in New London. I believe her mother was actually going to the school that exploded. But she left early or was absent on that fateful day.
They moved to Tyler where she attended schools. Her father had an Humble/Exxon station on the corner of Fifth St and Golden Rd where I bought gas regularly.
I left Tyler more than 30 years ago but have lots of great memories.

Howdy friend, I was hoping you would make it a little further south from Rusk to my town Alto Texas. It's hay day was in the 1950's, they grew tomatoes and other produce. Today there are more cows here than people, also lots of folks growing pine trees for eventual sale to loggers. Anyway, not a lot to see but we have the Caddo Indian's burial mounds and museum. Also a small community near the mounds called Weeping Mary. It was land given to freed slaves after the Civil War and their descendants still own that land. Many families have been here since the 1800's. Still, not a lot to see.

nice video, the thing is, you should drive thru hwy 69, town first then thru outskirt. I don't even recognized the view your showing. I used to live in Tyler then to Jacksonville. in Rusk if you just drive thru hwy 69 you be able to show Rust State Hospital right on the main highway. city hall so beautiful front & back, especially inside where you can see how they preserved the old century. anyway still a good video. Thank you for taking time doing this.

New London texas had the school gas explosion that killed most of the kids and teachers in 1937. Because of this they put an awful scent in odorless natural gas.
Also Jacksonville Tx is trying to develop a plan to buy surrounding properties to build a new loop around the city. As you could see the traffic is bad due to the intersection of two major trucking routes that converge right smack on the middle of town. It like driving in Houston every day.

Oh the good old movie theater. Kids today cannot relate to this. They will never know the struggle of having to look through the newspaper to see which theater around you was showing the movie you wanted to watch. And sometimes, that movie theater wasn't even near you. I remember traveling 10, 20, or even 30 miles to watch that movie. They don't know that going to the movies was a planned event because of this. I miss those days.

You missed a great opportunity at the reason for the mural in Rusk. The Texas state railroad, the world's longest state park runs from Palestine to Rusk with old steam
locomotives. It would have been a great video for your audience and an adventure for you. It was neat to see my old stopping ground in East Texas, particularly what I consider my home, Timpson.

In Carthage you didnt even go through the middle of town, or mention the tex ritter museum, or our new football field, and No you did not pronounce Tenaha correctly. its like ten-uh-ha, and its more of a farm town.
You should find people from each small town to show you around. Lol
Good job thougn, i enjoy your videos.

I've lived in Henderson all my life! The last street you drove down was pretty much the crack head side of town. Henderson has a lot of I'm better than you attitude with stuck up noses. Not as nice as you would think. Overton is a nice little town though. Have some cousins in New London. Tenaha is pronounced Ten ah ha.

The think about these small East Texas towns is that most folks live in the rural areas outside the towns. If you want to REALLY find out about Texas ( or any state, for that matter, don't neglect to get out into the farm and pasture areas. Townfolk are not entirely representative of the area.

FYI, there's still a passenger train that runs between Rusk and Palestine. Kind of fun and touristy. I rode it as a child with my parents way back in the '80s. Wow, these videos bring back memories from my childhood. Especially in the Piney Woods region of the state. Nice! Thanks for the content.

Awesome! I am born and raised in East Texas. From Carthage, but growing up here, i have been all over east texas and into Shreveport since we are so close to the state line. Boy do I have some interesting stories about small town life in East Texas. let me know if you want to do and interview.

Tenaha and Carthage are great little towns. I have cousins that graduated from Tenaha and now my aunt lives in Carthage. So we go to Carthage to visit my aunt and 2 cousins living there. Wonderful little towns! You didn't visit any neighborhood's in Overton tho. :(

I live in east Texas. Mostly good folks here. Just east of Carthage and a bit southeast. Is the International boundary marker between Republic of Texas, RT, and US. It is at the stateline with Louisiana. It is on Texas Hwy 31. You go through Deadwood, Texas.

One thing you may not know about New London is that it is the place of a major school explosion on March 18, 1937. It was the deadliest school disaster in U. S. History. So, although it may be a little spot in the road, it has some dark history.

Im a country boy. I love hunting, fishing. Loud cars, guns and loud music. My nearest naighbor is a mile away and i will never let my yard turn into a trash pile. People that have trash in their yard are modtly lazy bumbs collecting a welfare check.

I love to travel and check out off the beaten path towns but I rarely get to do so. I live in Arizona but when I get the opportunity’s to go east, like Florida, I take all the back roads I can find. Thanks for sharing your travels with me.

I grew up here and by your definition, my life was quaint until I went into the military and learned a different way. I spent most of my childhood in Anderson county and could be happy going back. I probably never will.

Overton has more than that on the end of town lol there are eating places, a grocery store, etc.
Henderson also has a strip with a bunch of stores. These videos aren't even showing the popular areas of town.

I'm in NC. I've been wanting to move to East Texas since 2008. I have family in San Antonio, Houston and Mc Allen.
I like Carthage and Rusk but been looking at Tyler so looking forward to your next video

reply

I love your trips, but you are missing so many interesting things!
Train rides in Rusk, other stars from East Texas towns, the New London school explosion, Bonny and Clyde in Overton and on and on!

i lived in overton for 42 yrs. it was a quaint lil town up until the 90's. i left in 2012. best decision i ever made. i haven't been back since. looks like it's even worse now. so sad.
reply

It's sad to see buildings so neglected. Did you see where that apartment building in NYC fell down just a few days ago It's over 100 years old, they'll likely tear what's left, down.
reply

Man oh man! If I had the money (and the youth/energy) I would love to buy an old theater like the one in Overton and remodel it into a glorious home. It could be so beautiful.
reply

If you love movie theaters you should come visit daingerfield the morris twin cinema is known for its. 99 cent movie costs, up until after 2010 it was 99 cents, now its a buck fiddy

I grew up just down the road in Kilgore. I do not recall much about Overton, but I thought it was a small oil town with oil money that would help keep it going. Maybe not.
reply

I just discovered you! Have you done Kilgore yet It has a beautiful downtown rich with heritage. Kilgore was an oil town and is also known for the Kilgore College Rangerettes.

Update the 1931 coolidge building has been renovated and will open as an insurance company. My building on the corner is a design studio and where I record my podcast show.
reply

Enjoy these videos. Too bad you didn't make it down to Nacogdoches and Lufkin. Nacogdoches is the oldest town in Texas. And Lufkin is my hometown.
reply

I enjoy your video’s. Do these towns still have a function school system. I think that would be something most viewers would like to know.
reply

The masonry work on the old buildings is just spectacular. Once craftsmen lived in this country in great abundance but sadly they seem extinct now.
reply

I invite you to come to the small towns of Bosque County, Texas! Our county has 8 towns, ranging in population from 3500 to 300!
reply

Sir, thank you for showcasing our beautiful East Texas. The reason that Overton's population swelled in 1936 was Oil, not the railroad.
reply

I lived in Hope, part of Kilgire mailing system, & Monroe so small, probably not a town now, I have not been back in 25 years
reply

Have you stopped giving the racial mix numbers I like hearing that in addition to your other information. I love your work.
