Rather depressing.
Any thoughts on why small towns in the South have fared so poorly compared to small rural towns in the North.
My own idea is that the rural South has a culture of resistance to change and innovation and was bound to be left behind. That might harken back to its roots in the feudal, agrarian, slave-holding South pre-Civil War. The North was very open to immigration, industrialisation and innovation since the 19th Century - part of the reason the North won the Civil War.

Hahahaahahahah this is incredible to see the USA in decline like this, it has definitely become a third world country, although they are still supposed leaders compared to European countries or Australia and so on, wow!
This is for you to live and experience how we live in third world or underdeveloped or developing countries, it is just as I am seeing it with my eyes, in this video it is a shame.

Ha! My bad Joe & Nic. I called you out thinking you missed a historical fact. See comment below. I was wrong. I assumed the De Witt Co on the first building referred to the Dewitt Motor Co. from early in the 1900's when in fact it probably refers to the name of the county. Keep up the good work.

9 minutes. looks like a Masonic lodge symbol, top center, or an old drilling rig. Oil. Not a home that's for sure. Yorktown, wow forgot all about that place, been there many times way beck in the 80s' and 90s'. Can't remember why, but we lived in Beeville back then an often went to / through Yorktown

Ah you saw a cat in Runge. but you missed one in Smiley, at around 8: 33 a black cat sitting atop a narrow 'box' grooming itself next to the front door. There is a red ride on lawn mower in the front yard and a dark red FORD SUV next to a white Chevrolet 4-door ute.

At 6: 30 it shows Bantams Roost which refers to the old Smiley high school mascot. Smiley and Nixon which is 8 miles west consolidated their schools in 1984 and had to rename both schools mascots. Nixon Bobcats. Smiley Bantams turned into the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs

Ive heard that Americans dont walk, but by God this is creepy. These places appear to be as Ghost-towns. I also had to laugh when the chap observed that some of those buildings were really old. Trust me - none of those buildings are anything like old.

Used to drive through Smiley a lot as a kid to visit my Grandparents. Drove through Smiley the last time (and probably for the last time) about a year ago for my grandma's funeral. It never was too pretty as a kid, but it was depressing as an adult.

Odd thing about Texas. You have three or four areas - Dallas Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio abd Austin that are doing pretty well, while the rest if the state is full of tiwns that are doung a slow fade out.

One or two decent looking houses, rest was horrible and zero charm. Quite depressing. Normally I seem to find some detail in these videos, that gives a positive vibe, not this time.

Yorktown looks like a good place to live, at least you don't have to deal with a draconian and oppressive HOA or too many city regulations or overreach.

Buying property in one of these places would need to be give away prices, there is no way to resell it, so it would be a permanent one way scenario.
