A complete scenic drive on Craters of the Moon Loop Drive in Idaho. Along the way we walk on Devil's Orchard Trail, hike up to the top of Inferno Cone, hike Snow Cone Trail and Spatter Cone Trail, and see the other great places this one of a kind park has to offer. After seeing Craters of the Moon Loop Drive we head through the rest of the park on U. S. Route 20, 26 & 93. Large portions of Idaho, Colorado and Utah were covered in dense smoke from various wildfires in California and elsewhere when this video was filmed in September, 2022, which gave the park even more of a prehistoric look and feel but meant we weren't able to do quite as much hiking as we wanted to as it was becoming hard to breathe after days of exposure. We included photos of the lava caves in the park, but weren't able to get video footage during this visit unfortunately. Chapter Shortcuts: 2: 47 - North Crater area 7: 42 - Devil's Orchard Trail 18: 18 - Inferno Cone 23: 06 - Spatter Cones area (Snow Cone & Spatter Cone Trails) 31: 33 - Lava Cascades 37: 49 - Caves Area 46: 44 - End of Loop Drive at U. S. Route 20, 26 & 93 #craters #volcano #volcanic #scenicdrive #idaho #nationalmonument #nationalpark #hiking #scenicrelaxation #adventure #4k #ambient #nature

Many years ago I flew over this area. If it seems stark on the ground it is every bit as much so from the air. From above the ground literally looked as if it had been covered with boiling lava and huge gas bubbles had formed then popped, spewing the lava out in a radial pattern. There was also one area that looked like the rilles on the surface of the moon, smooth edged canyons. One could easily imagine looking down and seeing an Apollo LM rising up to 'rendezvous' with the plane I was on.

Hi this is an amazing drive; I have to keep reminding myself that the drive is in Idaho and not along the ring road in Iceland, you never would have known that the US would have so many lava fields if you hadn't gone to the trouble of not only the drive but the downloading, not only very educational but amazing to watch once you have out done yourself, thanks again for sharing, Happy Aussie.

Many tectonic and volcanic phenomena can be observed in the area of the park. There are, among others, vast lava fields and some of the deepest tektoniczne rifts on Earth. An interesting route, with lots of beautiful landscapes. Thank you for the beautiful video. Thanks from Chicago, Illinois.

This is another one of your drives I would love to see in person. So much geology. Cinder cones and lava tubes oh my. I could spend a week or more there just studying the geography and geology. Thank you for the ride. This is another added to my list of must places to see in person. :D

In this setting, one would expect these pines to be Pinons (nut pines, of one species or another, out on this relative desert, but NO, THESE ARE LIMBER Pines, and these normally grow at very high elevation, close to timberline, and occasionally beyond.

I grew up near there and have been there many times when I was a kid. Back then it was just another boring place, just dirt, rocks, and heat, but as an adult I’m sure I would find it endlessly fascinating.

Beautiful video, thanks for sharing. Reminds me of the Etna on Sicily, but this is on a much grander scale. Visiting a live volcano I will never forget.
