Motels vs. a tent? Mmmm I will take a tent at the local camp ground any day!
So it is worth dropping 600 on a good tent that will last a lifetime!
Although the Zpacks tent would rank low on my list.
Something more like an old Army pup tent would be my preferred choice.
Tough as hell and super cheap!
As an upgrade you can replace the wooden poles with newer carbon fiber poles. I would suggest applying an oilcloth solution to the tent halves. For a water proofing layer. Remember soldiers! Waterproof any piece of kit that is cloth. Water will kill a man faster than the enemies bullets! Waterproof! Waterproof! Waterproof!
Just my thought. I am suspicious of any space age materials.

I ordered a duplex a month ago, but zpacks has yet to fulfill order. Is the duplex worth waiting for who knows how long? Should I keep waiting, or move on and buy something else? I've sent dozens of IMs, comments and emails. The company has responded twice by email with a generic message: Regrettably, we have fallen a little behind the stated lead time when your order was placed. Lead times do not include shipping time. notice, they failed to address when they would ship. Zpack - if you're reading this: WHEN WILL ORDER 63508 ship?

Dear Darwin
I hear you. I am not as tall and beleive plexamid will be good enough for me. From what I see on there website, the tents are basically the same except for the size.
I hike in India and Nepal at reletively higher altitudes, so weight is important but so is cold and snow. Now I dont do any high altitude climbing but I do tend to see snow.
What is your experience with the tent, if any in the snow and winds. Please advice.
Regards
Gaurav

One time i set up my BA hvul copper spur 2 in a bit of a wetland, next to a body of water, and went to sleep. i woke up warm and dry. upon leaving my tent, i noticed that the entire fly was soaked inside from condensation and the outside was drenched. but i was warm and completely dry. didnt even notice the condensation until i got out of the tent. there is something to be said about mesh inners and separate flys. just saying. to each their own.

Just dumbstruck. my Sears Hillary 2P Alpine is 25+ years old and works fine, and now you rave for a 600 tent that is lucky to last two thru hikes. yes I have replaced the solid poles with lighter hollow ones, have siliconed the seams multiple times over the years and there are little zit patches on the fly from sparks. but it's gone on the PCT, the AT and the Grand Canyon and I hope more soon. It pitches fly only for those hot days BTW

I used a double wall two person tent for years. Did it work? Yes! Was it heavy? Yes! Did it soak up water and leak? Yes!
I have a Triplex and it is awesome. Way more durable than my old nylon tents and way more comfortable and easy to set up. Worth the price? That is up to you.

Just got my Zpacks Duplex! Set it up for the first time today, only problem I had was staking it out correctly and was under a wind advisory lol. I think it's going to be great! Thru-hiking the 160 mile River to River Trail next week, I can't wait!

Have you overnighted in Toiyabe near Mt Rose? I live in Galena Forest across the street from Marilyn's Pond and it's a short hike (4-5 miles) from the house to BLM. So if you ever need a place to park just let me know. Steph C.

I have an MSR Hubba Hubba that is similar to the Nemo tent. It is possible to set that up with the rainfly first. It is a bit of a hassle to set it up this way, but it does ensure the inner tent stays dry.

Great info Dixie. I made the mistake of collecting 3 tents so far that I have decided are way too heavy for this 61 year old to hump around. Thanks for the insight. Going to look at some lighter tents.
