You’ll read a lot about how the new BMW iX3 is the first of a whole new generation of BMWs; how significant the company thinks this Neue Klasse’ (new class) architecture is; and how it’s the firm’s first software defined’ car. The new platform will underpin at least six new EVs by 2028 including an electric 3 Series, to be called i3: so this is isn’t an unimportant car. But beyond all the hype, just know that, first and foremost, this is a BMW that drives very well in the traditional BMW style - as you'll find out as you join Matt Prior for this drive on both road and race track. In the UK, iX3 prices start at 58, 755 and deliveries start in March 2026. Subscribe to the channel and you'll never miss an Autocar video. I too like it. Cleaner lines than many BMWs of recent times although the 7 and 5 Series were a bit of a reversal of the overly fussy styling and ever growing kidney grilled of their predecessors. I really love the look of the interior with the lovely steering wheel and wrap around panel under the windscreen although I didn’t appreciate that BMW had removed so many physical buttons. Ergonomically my i3 with its two screens, iDrive controller and the multitude of short cut buttons is by far the best I have ever lived with. I spec’s Apple Play when I bought it so I have all that I need.
The iX3 bodes well for the next i3 and the Neue Klasse models that follow. I understand that next year’s production of the iX3 is sold out in Europe so it seems that this new model is finding plenty of admirers.

Having the vents controlled through the screen has never been an issue in our Tesla and is actually quite good as my wife and I share the car so they auto adjust to our own preferences depending on who sits in the driver's seat. It's a shame to see the iX3 only has a manual steering wheel column adjust, as again my wife and I both prefer quite different wheel positions. I definitely won't be buying another Tesla as I don't want to be funding Elon now he's gone mad, but its hard to find a replacement with all the same features I love from the Tesla.

Phone companies before the IPhone you need buttons. After the IPhone only a few companies make phones and all copy the iPhone. People want engines even though they break and need all this maintenance and we make money plus the performance. After Tesla lap records and ease of use no buttons or so much maintenance saving money. yeahhhhhh the future is upon the industry and those who refuse will be left behind period.

I like this chaps reviews generally.
However, he is starting to come across as a bit of a dinosaur in relation to buttons.
Come on man, it's tedious as hell and you are not changing anything. So many 'old lag' car reviewers moan on about the topic. Dinosaurs, boring.
There are journos telling us about the interesting tech and the future. He is just coming across as boring in this video.

Same disappointed that I felt with the new 5 series. Front and rear are nice but the sides do miss all sharpness and masculinity the E and F series BMWs had. It's no longer an athlete but rather an oldman with postponed midlife crisis. It just looks like a generic car on the sides which is a nogo for a socalled premium car.

It's ugly outside. It's ugly and awkward inside. It's expensive. It doesn't drive particularly well, with loads of understeer and numb steering.
Who asked for this Who wants this It's just not appealing in any way at all. The ony thing it accomplishes is to make an X3 look less bad.

Looks like the pre- & post-production teams have STILL NOT ADDRESSED OR RECTIFIED THE ABYSMAL 'Muffled Audio with NO dynamic range' issue - it STILL sounds like the soundtrack commentary was recorded on an Edison cylinder phonograph from the late 1800's - SORT IT OUT!

I don't like to bash a man earning an honest living, but how this chap is in the position here is in boggles the mind. Perhaps in print he's fine, but every video bores me to tears, even a new GT3 is made to sound wearisome and mundane.

You look like what you are, an older man trying something new without really understanding it, and like everyone does when they reach that age, comparing it to cars from 20 years ago and saying everything was better back then.
reply

Seldom seems to be said but the real challenge for touch screens in right hand drive is that not many of us are left handed which makes our interaction with small icons more challenging and sub optimal as we stab away at it!

Good objective review, although press day reviews don't really allow the time for a proper evaluation. I too, would like buttons and knobs and will be interested to see how the voice control system works when I get the chance.

Slower than all EV competitors, passive suspension, Tesla ergonomics, ugly. my 30y old poster on the wall has a very different BMW, from an era when they cared. Porsche is the last one left, but damn expensive (

I prefer the looks of this over any of the other recent BMWs. I thought the IX looked like an Austin Allegro. Can see elements of the I8 and 2002 in it. The humungous beaver teeth have gone which is a good thing.

Brilliant car. Only negatives seem to be the horrible frunk concept, mucb better executed with the new GLC EQ. Also a lot of luxuries are not available, cooled seats, electrically adjustable steering wheel etc.
reply

These comments about the buttons are not very well informed. Anyone driving one of these cars without buttons will tell you they don’t miss them at all. Maybe it’s an age thing. Reluctance to change
reply

My god, just when you thought BMWs couldn't get uglier! That is beyond hideous - I cannot think of anything worse (Pontiac Aztek or Ssangyong Rodius are both better looking than this thing.
reply

No physical buttons is off course cheaper for the manufacturer but more importantly it turns every option/function into a digital function which can be switched on and off remotely at a cost.
reply

I actually like the neue klasse looks but missing interior buttons is a huge miss from BMW. Current M3 has iDrive 8 and it is just fustrating to use as some functions are touch scren only.
reply

Future e waste. The EU should fine BMW for crimes against the planet with how many of these will be junked right after warranty expires.
One headlight will probably total it out.

Isn’t is misleading to price the iX 3 at 62k at the start of the video while that is actually the price for the high spec M version It’s starts at 58k if I am not mistaken
