Left foot braking #33

Just what is and why do left foot braking? Anders: In this video, he is talking a bit of nonsense. In normal traffic, you really want to have the car coast as much as possible in gear. At least if you have any regards for fuel economy anyways. If you're serious about hypermiling (which you should be, cause why waste gas if you're stuck in normal daily driving) you never want to use the brakes of the car at all, except to bring it down from around 15mph to stop. Ideally, you want the car to be rolling the whole way and never stop at all. When a car is coasting in gear, it uses zero fuel. If you're coasting in neutral, the car is using a little bit of gas. So allways try to coast in gear, as you're getting that distance you're covering for free. Using the brakes is terribly wasteful, you're turning your fuel money into heat in your brake discs.

For doing that, you have to do everything right. For instance, while approaching a corner, you might think that 3rd gear is OK but then you find out that 2nd gear is the ideal, so now you have to lift of the brake and then press it again with your right foot, the same lag comes again. Bear that in mind and one other thing, won't brakes bake up while pressing gas and brake pedals at the same time?

I suppose its a good thing to learn but Chris mentioned in the film about covering the brake or slightly braking and (should you need to) will brake quicker if a stray sheep jumps out. but surely you're DELAYING your reaction time as your feet have to re-adjust

im a southpaw and i always brake with my left foot in a manual car i find it faster for braking and transitioning, i do this in a focus and a fiesta standard models, i didn't it except it to be complicated

Easiest car to left foot break in is an automatic car. since there is only 2 pedals. so if the computer is tuned properly you could do this or the classic heel-toe breaking (using only your right foot)

This video explains perfectly why I hate the new top gear. Watched Chris Harris for a number of year his never been a comedian but BBC are forcing him to try and be funny but it doesn-t work

i have tried and tried for maybe 3 years in my 350z to figure this out, but i still dont get it: -( i guess i will always be slow - never mind, i need a family friendly car anyway: -)

I tried to do this when I was 18. I stopped instantly, stalled obviously and had to speed away to stop the van full of extremely angry workmen behind me from beating me to a pulp.

Hans Stuck also used this method racing Audi Quattros in the Trans Am and GTO racing series in the late '80s. It definitely takes a lot of practice.

Just found this after watching last nights episode of Top Gear. I bet when he was making this film for Autocar he didn-t think he would ever be a presenter on TG.
