The Volkswagen Golf GTI is perennially one of our favourite hot hatchbacks. In fact, it might even be our favourite, unless the Ford Focus ST is, or the Seat Leon FR is, or the Renault Megane Renaultsport is, or the Peugeot 308 GTI is, or. well, look, the simple fact is there are lots of brilliant hot hatchbacks

I wish car reviews will stop this power to power comparisons. Certainly not the most important thing viewers and drivers care about. The GTI is best in its class because it offers the full package of sporty, comfort, practicle and affordability. Compared to the other so called 'more horsepower' vehicles that are just full of plastic.

I really liked driving this car even though I am looking more forward to drive the new Golf R next week on Mallorca. The GTI is a good mix of sportiness and comfort. And the actual model really offers all the top technology from the VW Group which you mostly not find in other models of this class.

I agree the GTI isn't all about pure pace. Problem is in terms of pace it's almost falling into the fiesta st bracket. Its only 0. 2 secs faster to 60. So while I don't mind it being slower than rivals I wouldn't get the base one as its lagging behind a bit now

Best hatchback: Golf; best hot hatch: Golf GTI; best sports sedan: M3; best sports car: 911; best luxury sedan: S-Class; best luxury SUV: Range Rover, etc. Some iconic cars represent and signify their own class, and they are unbeatable.

Everyone knows that whilst VW quotes fairly modest BHP figures, the actual figures when the car is put on the dyno are much higher. My one (2016 PP with 227bhp quoted) dynoed at just over 260bhp stock and this is fairly typical.

Not a big fan of these exterior revisions they've made. leaning a bit toward -over design- in my book. HOWEVER, those progressive turn signals are kinda dope. Too bad we probably won't get them in the US.

But the extra power doest make this engine less flexible nor less balanced, and that was proven in the 265/280/290/300 version of the Leon Cupra with the same engine.

They havent changed the big problem with the previous one, it wasnt fun at all. If you want a hot hatch that's practical, well priced and fun, dont buy the golf.

I test drove both the Golf R & the GTI and opted for the latter, because as you say, the GTI gives you the perfect balance without being extreme.

The Fiesta ST has been often rated above the previous Golf GTI for fun factor. I wonder how the new Golf and new Fiesta will compare?
