NEW Honda e 2020 review - First drive - Autocar

The 2020 Honda e is Honda's first full battery electric vehicle. It's compact on the outside - smaller than a Honda Jazz - and pretty compact on the inside, too. But it is quite funky in there, with two 12in digital displays as well as a full digital instrument pack and, as standard, rear view cameras instead of conventional door mirrors. With a 35. 5kWh battery within its short wheelbase, it's relatively light for a BEV. A little over 1500kg is heavy for a car of supermini size, but it's light for a BEV. The downside is that, unlike cars like a Volkswagen ID3 or a Nissan Leaf, the Honda e has a relatively small battery and therefore a limited range. It should drive well, though. The motor is at the back which allows a tight turning circle and a steering system with no torque steer, while there is four-wheel independent suspension thanks to MacPherson struts all around, which promise a lively driving experience. Ah, yes, folks, the Honda hee-hee e.
. This obscenely overpriced, overteched object looks like a cross between a batt-pack-shopping-trolley and a doubly concave mobile matchbox. Saleswise, in the UK, I predict that it will prove to be a colossal white elephant. It features a boot the size of a postage stamp plus a range just about capable of carrying you twice round the block - ok, make that three times - added to which there's a charging-port on the bonnet resembling the top of your nan's commode. Finally (this next bit is tech overload gimmickry gone beserk and then some) we come to a multitude of in-your-face screens stretching the entire length of the dash would you believe, one, wait for it, forming a mock fish tank. I kid you not. Presumably its purpose is in answer to masses of ev drivers demanding of the manufacturer that they be sure the facia incorporates images of fake floating perch etc. The one aspect I applaud are those innovative door cameras but you pay through the nose and mouth to enjoy their presence.
[News recently reached me regarding an individual who, apparently murmuring yuck phrases like, 'Cutesy-cutesy-cool' and probably at one and the same time wetting their underwear in the process of viewing the thing, proceeded to put down a deposit to purchase this Japanese runabout. A few weeks after taking delivery, said person went into a motor accessories shop wanting a windscreen wiper for it. The assistant's response was, 'Sounds about right! ']

This is a great little car. Everything about it is a good compromise for a small car. And it's got great style. In artistic design design terms, is got Balance, Harmony and Order. The design of the back matches the front. So when I see the back I can recognise the car by the front. I lave the dash and the controls. And unlike the Tesla, not every thing is operated through the one screen. I want to drive a car, not play with an electronic screen. I would buy one of these over an expensive luxury car any day. Don't get me wrong I love true luxurious cars and drive one. But I am not talking about fashionable luxury brand names which are for too expensive for what you get, they are full of unnecessary gadgets and performance which are mostly useless and impractical. Good one Honda a real practical car. Other makers could learn a lot from this little car.

There are 3 problems with Honda E, despite the japanese craftsmannship: -
a. short nose: collision issues in an accident-
b. ultra small trunk: not really suited for a shopping city car-
c. a perfectly executed Mazda MX30, with perfect layout / size for the same price

Honda: -We're going to make this really attractive EV that's retro inspired. Oh, but we're not going to release it in the largest market, the US. We're also never going to make an R version of the Fit. We're dumb. Don't you want this Gundam Wing inspired Civic? Hello? -

No different to buying a v8 or big displacement vehicle, they're not built for economy or range but because you like them, and chances are people that would get these will have a second car for longer journeys anyway

Im not exactly loving the look of this car. It looks somewhat cheap, but isnt cheap. And the range thing looks like its gonna limit its use here in N America. Sure in Europe its not gonna be a problem.

Battery capacity is too trash to buy. Lease? Sure, if that's your thing. It needs battery at least twice as good to be worthwhile.
