Chevrolet Corvette C8 review - American-made sports car hits European roads - Autocar

The eighth-generation Chevrolet Corvette has landed in Europe. Available at last in official 'export' specification compliant with European emissions regulations, and finally on sale in the UK in factory-warranted right-hand drive form, this is a landmark version of one of the oldest, most famous and most successful sports cars in the world. And we've been waiting for it for a long time. This car has been through a key technical transformation as part of which its famous and character-defining Chevy 'small block' V8 engine has migrated from the front of the car to the back. Now mid-engined (like an Audi R8 or Ferrari F8) rather than front-engined (like a Jaguar F-Type or BMW M4, the C8 has also adopted steel coil suspension in place of its old leaf sprung axles, and drops a manual gearbox entirely in favour of a new twin-clutch automatic. Power for European versions is slightly lower than in North America, pegged at 475bhp rather than 495-; but standard chassis specification is improved, with all official European-market cars getting Corvette's 'Z51' upgrade kit as standard. And so, after nearly seventy years of production, this car finally stands ready to compete with the greatest sports cars in Europe on their home turf; with a modern and dynamically optimised mechanical layout; and in right-hand drive form, for those that want it. But is it good enough to really threaten them? Matt Saunders went to Frankfurt to begin finding out

Hey from across the pound! Canada --
The car response when you press the gas pedal is amazing. The way it takes on the curves is phenomenal. I have a 2021 Z51 Zeus's Bronze 2lt with front lift.
So I went to the racetrack to see how fast I could go around the track. Guys! It's like driving a go-cart on steroids. The amount of lateral G's it can handle is fantastic.
Should you buy a C8? Hell yes! The performance, the quality of the ride, the interior layout and the fun factor will put a big smile on your face -. Finally, I was able to do 1033 km at 105 km/hrs with an average of 6. 1lt/100km on one fuel tank.

You could say that Chevrolet were thirty years behind, the Corvette should-ve been Global that long ago because the competition is that far ahead, and, unfortunately, American Cars have been labelled with Coca- Cola interiors and cast Iron exteriors, personally I don-t think interiors like this are particularly inviting, no feeling of I want to get in and drive, it just doesn-t look the money.

Which C8 will hold best value? -
My allocation should be here next week, and I plan on driving it 3-6 months due to personal reason. Is there any configuration recommended, to reduce exposure, for resale since I-ll be selling within 6 months after driving it? I can only afford the 1LT so that-s a must. Color choices (exterior and interior, options, etc?

The styling is clunky to say the least. It looks like an exercise where they kept adding bits from other cars. It ends up being not exactly ugly, but you won't be looking out longingly at it on the drive. Check out Chip Foose's design for this car - how to link the old front engine and new mid-engine Covettes. Now THAT I would buy!

Just because it is the next model in the Corvette series why, given its mid engined and clearly shares no similarities, is half the review all about the differences?
We haven-t had the Corvette in the UK in RHD so I doubt anyone has much experience if previous models.
A lazy review full of irrelevant comparisons

It-s so hard to discern your opinion of the car, due to the large amount of time criticizing or downplaying the car in almost every regard, until finally you start to focus on some positives. A somewhat confusing review- but I think you thought it was a very good car in the end?
reply

Sheesh critics, he-s British, they-re dry! I thought it was a very positive (and yes, a bit dry but that-s expected, innit? -. I would have liked to have seen a bit more time devoted to handling and performance, hopefully to be done in a future video.
reply

Give Matt Saunders a break! - yes he epitomises a typical dry British evaluation and he is not Prior, Bovington, Catchpole, Sutcliffe or Harris - but he does an honest and down to earth review.
For glitz and glamour there are lots of others

Audio treatment and a properly gained lav mic would have made this video much less of an endurance event. Great info but the production could get much more competent with a very small investment. I still want a C8 though, so job done
reply

That American saying. -The Vette gets 'em wet. - hmmm. no longer applies here. visually it's an abortion. You'd still buy an equivalent Porsche product over this any day of the week. even if you had to stretch the finances.
