Toyota GR86 drive review - new affordable sports car tested on track - Autocar

The Toyota GT86 was one of our favourite sports cars of the last decade, and now there's a successor for it. The GR86 becomes Toyota's third Gazoo Racing 'halo' performance model after the GR Yaris and the GR Supra, and will also be its cheapest. The car goes on sale in the UK in December 2021 before appearing in showrooms in May 2022, and it's expected to cost from less than -30, 000. Like the GT86, the GR- is powered by a front-mounted 'flat-four' petrol engine and has a low-slung rear-wheel drive chassis. Engine capacity has risen from 2. 0-litres to 2. 4-, and peak power and torque outputs have jumped by between 15- and 20 per cent; while body rigidity has been improved by 50 per cent, and kerbweight cut by 20kg. Both manual and automatic gearboxes will be offered, and range-topping versions of the car will roll on 18in alloy wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres. If that reads like the makeup of a more serious sports car than the super-accessible and ever-entertaining GT86 was, so it should. But that needn't mean the new GR86 can't really entertain when let loose on track, as Autocar Road Test Editor Matt Saunders found out in a GR86 prototype tested around Castelloli circuit in Spain

Having owned a BRZ and now daily-ing a GT86, I love these cars. This seems to slightly improve on everything - a bit lighter, a little more power and torque, better sounding engine, updated interior, better OEM tyres. Proper tonic to the same old warm-german hatches/coupes.

6. 2 for 0-100, that's not slow! My mate's Honda S2000 could pin you back in the seat well enough and that does 0-100 in 5. 9 officially. Never felt like that thing was too slow! And it revved higher and sounded awesome, but had less torque than this will.

I had a brz but engine felt rough and characterless and the battery would go flat after 1 week of sitting. Nice driving position and ergonomics. Didn't do it for me though, good luck with this one Toyota- thanks for trying!

It's a nice car but many would prefer to fit a high quality suspension kit to the old model and get a supercharger that'll give an easy but sensible 300 BHP. The thrill of new car ownership soon wanes.

Test drove one yesterday! I loved it! Track mode all the time. It feels much nicer than the previous generation (which I love also) When I returned from the test drive someone had bought it.

What the, Toyota? Are you saying your 2-door sports car will produce less power than your 2-door hot hatch (GR Yaris) and the soon to be released 4-door hot hatch (GR Corolla? What the!

Let-s do a comparison between the GR86 and the Fiesta ST!
Put the most affordable FWD and RWD fun cars against one another! People would love to see who comes up more fun! -

Hats off to Toyota. A sensible thinking man-s sports car - and a barrel of laughs. Not some over powered, over-tyred, numb, understeer wagon. I might even get one!

Small questions on UK spec version;
Does it have auto lights/wipes and a auto dimming rear view mirror?
Do the mirrors fold in when lock/unlocked?

Good review. However, I do wish Autocar would use both metric and imperial measures of power and torque, so international viewers can understand.
