We bring the Toyota GT 86 face-to-face with the eighties thriller to see if it lives up to the legend. Read more tommyistommy: I want to love the FRS, I really do. but that motor just is lame in every sense of the word. It sounds horrible, it has a massive dead spot in the powerband at the worst point and it doesn't really have rewarding race to the redline after the dead spot. Its supposed to be a car that isn't about the motor but it becomes the focus of the car for me. Had the gt86/frs/brz come out in a hatchback with a high revving inline 4 I think it would have fared far better. When the FRS came out, I was driving a mr2 spyder and 95 h22a swapped prelude. The FRS seemed to tick both boxes, it is a good looking small car with rwd and great handling. I wanted one until I drove one. My 20 year old honda had more power and a much better sound at every rpm (I have dyno and drag slips to confirm the difference my butt dyno felt, about 20 more hp to the wheels and it traps 8-9 mph higher) but as well as my prelude drives, nothing compares to rwd handling. I didn't feel as though the frs was an upgrade from the mr2 spyder I was driving at the time to quench my rwd thirst. It wasn't any quicker, didn't handle any sharper and had similarly bad interior. I also wasn't a fan of the lack of sunroof/targa/convertible option. I ended up selling my mr2 spyder simply because I got an offer of double what I paid for it and I picked up a 1987 mr2. The 4age is more rewarding to drive in every sense than the f20a plus nothing compares to the analog feel of the aw11 so I am currently happy. I hope the frs/gt86/brz survive long enough to have some of my personal shortcomings addressed but until then I'll stick to driving ancient cars until someone gets it right.

I, to this day, refuse to acknowledge the GT86 as an -- successor. Because it fails the biggest thing or me that the AE86 had, it was still a Corolla.

Wonderful review and you handled the gt absolutely lovely through some of those corners. Ae looked a little bit more of a handful to control.

4: 00 I don't think you meant -communative-. Does nobody edit the script or review the presentation to see if you are making any sense?

AHHH I just started Initial D and have been planning on getting a GT86/FR-S/BRZ for a while longer. This just locked it in for me: )
