I have a look at repair a 2011 Ford Escape that had a customer complaint of, I have to turn the key really hard to crank the engine over. This is a relatively common problem on Escapes and Mariners. The ignition column lock module is the part at fault in this case. It's raw and uncut video!

My next door neighbor has been a mechanic for over 35 years at our local GM/Toyota dealership, he says their Repair charge Amount Work Manual will say that GM allows two hours to repair this broken item on a vehicle but this certain problem they have never run into but maybe two times in x years and the repair takes them 3 hours but they can only charge for two.

Well, I performed this surgery today without removing the wheel and the good news is that she starts flawlessly now. The bad news is the wheel doesn't lock and the one turn signal won't turn off after completing a turn. Any advice on what I messed up would be appreciated.

I tell my wife all the time when she is criticized, don't worry about it. I don't care what you do, and it can be perfect, there will always be a critic. My point is this guy got 48 thumbs down and the project could not have been better, nor the company.

On AMCs, you turn the key to Accessory, which exposes a pin that needs to be pushed down. Push it down and the lock cylinder pops right out. Get this: on my Jeep, the horn is wired through the ignition switch. It's almost always direct wired otherwise.

They call it a Module now b/c they've incorporated the Ign Lock Cylinder and Ign Switch into one component -- same cheap, poorly made parts. with a new ambiguous name and twice the price!
Thanks Ford for keeping your eye on what's important

I changed one of these, sheer bolt too. I clicked it together, wrenched on the nut till it snugged down, then clink, bolt snapped off. screwed the shroud back on, et voila. No dremmel needed.

Here's a free tip: use a screwdriver to latch the driver's door. that way the chime wont drive you crazy. luckily on fords they put the ajar switch in the latch.

Good video. I have a 2008 Escape I may have to do this with soon. Ive noticed it starting to do the same thing. Did Ford have a recall or TSB on this problem?
