Come along with Eric O. at the SMA shop as we have a look this 2005 Chevrolet 3500 Dually Duramax 4x4 with an Allison Automatic that is having some shifting problems. It has a code P0700 stored in the PCM. It also has a code P0773 Shift Solenoid E Circuit Fault stored in the transmission control module. Let's see what's wrong!

Oh crap. sadly it happened, jiggling wires found the fault then while you weren't watching, fixed itself. Darn it. Once you unwrapped the harness up to the other merging harness and no blinking light, I immediately thought The multi-pin connector on the trans. I'm no professional but wouldn't a thin layer of die-electric grease help with the termination/pin connection? I noticed a previous comment to rig up a sound device so you didn't have to focus on the test light while diagnosing. Sounds like a great idea. Maybe one of those 12v reminders they use for door ajar or key in the ignition or some other nuisance device you can hear when a circuit is broken/open. Great example of Diaries of an independent mechanic. Some of us know that independents work is much harder.

Hey SMA, I have a 2011 Chevy with 6. 6/Allison came in with tons of codes, had to replace trans harness inside and TCM, had local trans shop flash TCM, now it will say gear not engaged and gear indicator flashing when in gear. This was happening yesterday when truck was at operating temp but did not happen when cold. Noticed that the turbine rpm would equal engine rpm during this condition and could reset by shifting into neutral and restarting truck then putting into gear quickly it would be fine until I shifted into another gear. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I sit here watching in amazement at your knowledge, while apparently others are worrying about whether or not you have a seat belt on or not. How did you become so good at electrical problems? I know experience played a lot in it, but did you go to school for it? Have a great mentor?

Great video. Tells me I need to learn how to read schematics better. What is constant, what is switched power, what the boxes represent. And how to chase a short. My scanner doesnt read ant transmission codes, same vehicle, so up grade?

Your methodical attack of a problem is a thing of beauty. Your deductive skills and masterful use of your test equipment is impressive. If you ever get tired of working on cars I think you would make an excellent computer tech.

Where did you get the diagram schematic of the wires and harness? My 2008 6. 6L Duramax c5500 Kodiak is doing the same thing. Shifts hard and gets stuck in 1 gear sometimes. Sometimes it won't even move and only moves in reverse.

once i lost power to the oil presser gauge sometimes on my 2005 GMC Diesel and it was a wire rubbing in the harness routed over the power steering bracket it had rubbed through cutting into the oil presser wire Haha. all good now.

Before I try unplugging the wire should I unplug both of my batteries? My truck is having the same issue and every time I move the wires around it works great but then after a few times of using it goes back to acting up!

GM have wire gages to check pin drag using different dia wire to test rather than rely on feel alone, but they don't detect surface conditions of pins and sockets, gold plated connectors like CAT use are in the own league

I've got a 2001 duramax with a 1000 allison transmission and my amps are at 21. 8 and its in limp mode sometimes it comes out and goes right back in i just like to know whats wrong with it and fix it.
