Chevy Truck: Battery Dies Overnight Mr.: I've been fighting a parasitic draw on my 2003 Chevy 2500 for over a year, watched every video I can find on it. My biggest problem is that it's intermittent. It may go a couple months without a problem, then a dead battery. I try the diagnostics again with no good leads. Any suggestions are appreciated, parts are getting expensive for an old truck.

Auto electric is something I struggle with. Not necessarily because I don't understand it, but because I am color blind (red/green specifically. Could they have any more wire color combinations? Sheesh! I am constantly having my wife or my kids come out to the garage to tell me what color a wire is. And they are not always a reliable resource(Girls seem to see things differently than guys. Definitely makes things take a lot longer than the should. Often leads to frustration and results in the parts cannon. LOL

A mate of mine had that problem on his trailblazer, very often but not always. He ran the whole program and found nothing yet the problem continued. Late one evening He happened to be walking by his window glanced out to the vehicle, and saw the headlights come on and thinks someone is fooling around in it. He finds no one and the doors locked.
Long story short, he eventually discovered that a body module was randomly turning on the headlights after dark and draining the battery.

Just curious, if the the motor module was out of position maybe it was trying to 'Home' the module. I was thinking about cycle testing it into and out of 4wd. Recently the convertible top on the wife's Mustang was stuck down. I did a quick search before I started testing the switch. Result: window limit switches, oh yeah. Short cycled the windows and ran the top up. And yes there's still may be a switch going bad.

How things have changed since I was on the tools, I have head light bulbs wired to fuses. I plugged them into the offending circuit and wiggled the plugs and wires until the bulb went out. Our auto electrician had a horn he used to wire up, usefully the fault was in the boot but really annoying to everyone else in the garage.
Boot = trunk
Garage = shop.

Your process really helped me determine why a 2004 Nissan 350Z IVT wasn't working. This was a friends car and he had already loaded the parts canon and we were able to determine the issue was in the ECM. The ECM was not sending a signal to command the IVT to actuate. Thank you Eric for providing superior logic. Why was there no cameo today with Mrs. O?

Have you ever had to deal with cars that have adaptive cruise or radar faults? Love to see a video about that b/c of the place I work at. Almost all the vehicles, mainly semi trucks, have that tech and CONSTANTLY throw codes and errors. Not sure if it's different for cars, but seeing you diag a problem on those complex systems would be PRETTY DANDY.

'Dead battery every morning. Trunk-mounted, retracting radio antenna was vandalized/broken. It wouldn't retract at key-off, so its motor stayed energized all night. You must have learned a lot from old guys too. Thanks for the GMC truck stuff. Mine is a '01 Silverado, but it lives in AZ.

I guess the portion that I was missing in my understanding. was that the circuit must have been completed through the solenoid/motor's housing, which must be attached to either the transfer case, or the axle, and and that supplied the grounding that allowed current to flow.
