Why is EVERYONE hating on the NEW BMW M5

Change your car with Carwow: The time has come for Mat to review the all-new BMW M5! Now it’s fair to say that the new M5 has had a fair bit of criticism thrown its way since it was unveiled back in June, but is it all justified Mat’s about to take a closer look and find out. Starting with the design, there’s no denying that it has a pretty aggressive look to it. There’s a huge front bumper that comes with massive air intakes, while there’s also a large blacked-out M grille which can even illuminate at night! Along the side, there are side skirts and M side mirrors, while at the back there’s a crazy diffuser-styled bumper, coupled with quad tailpipes! It’s even possible to add a carbon fibre roof as well. Step inside and you’ll find a traditional M interior, with a large swooping digital dial and infotainment screen. There are loads of M touches as well, including the M steering wheel, M sports seats, and even M pedals! There’s lots of soft-touch material throughout, and a lot of M functionality hidden in the infotainment system. Under the bonnet, the new M5 is still powered by a 4. 4-litre twin-turbo V8. However, it’s now also a hybrid, so when the engine and electric motor combine it produces 727hp and 1, 000Nm of torque! But of course, the hybrid system massively adds to the weight, with the M5 clocking in at 2, 435kg! All in, the new M5 costs from around 111, 000. So is it worth it! You’ll need to stick with Mat to see for yourself! It’s a bit sad. I used to be an utter BMW-fanboy. Driving almost exclusively BMWs for 15 years (2er/M2, 3er/M3, 5er, X3, X5) and I really loved the cars - ending with one of my favorites, the G21 (340i and then M3. With the new gen of cars, BMW is curing me of this I won’t pay premium-prices for scratchy plastic, no buttons and a weird touch interface for everything. On top more push towards subscription-model non-sense. Currently looking at a KIA EV9 for a new family car. If you’d have told me 10 years ago, I’d look at a Kia over a BMW, I would have laughed. Well. Laugh is on you, BMW, I guess.
I will only drive these car as short-term and financially attractive company cars - but that’s how most of them are sold in Germany anyways.

The design is boring and uninspired. The only heritage element left in the BMW design is the grill and headlights. They have no identity in terms of silhouette, body line, or any other segment of the car. The interior is copy/paste 2024 luxury brand and there seems to be no compelling reason to want this car. The M5 (in my opinion) was a struggling platform in terms of demand and marketing due to it being a big body sports sedan which is a hard category to create unique design in - and even if the driving dynamics of this car end up being stellar, no one wants to spend this amount of money on THIS M5.

The styling of all new BMW's is simply awful. There isn't a single model that I like, not one, where as previously they were something I lusted over. And then there's plug-in hybrid. Why Having to charge AND put petrol into a car is just the dumbest of ideas, and the only reason people do it is to save on company car tax. However an M5 really isn't going to be on the company car list for the majority of its buyers. Someone at BMW needs to be given their P45 as a beer mat for that decision, along with the entire design team.

So one day BMW senior members gather together and decide: we have a perfect car in every way (F90, it's mesmerizingly beautiful, lightning quick, drives perfectly, and something to be remembered and praised for generations to come. How can we destroy it
Well. let's make it heavier and slower first of all and then we have to find a way to make it as generic (you say ugly) as it can be, using lower quality materials and then, we shove it right up people's arse with a hefty price tag and we call it G90

Obviously I can't afford it but even if I don't think I would want it. Just to much fancy shit to feel comfortable in. To much display, settings, lights, colors plastic. I mean I like a big screen and a fully digital tacho but otherwise I like a more classic and elegant design like for example that porsche had. If I had to choose I would much rather take the audi or porsche. Performance wise they are all pretty similar but I think I would feel the least comfortable, relaxed and good in the m5

Styling is subjective. Some like it, some hate it. I think its a good looking car.
The weight is due to the Euro Emissions standards that all Euro manufacturers have to abide by or pay HEAVY fines. Standards that are getting even stricter in July 2025. BMW had to design this car with that limitation in mind.
About the only thing you can fault BMW here for is the interior or lack of perceived quality of it over the outgoing model.

For me its the worst of both worlds, a heavy PHEV with a fake V8 noise piped through the speakers to enhance the noise due to EU emissions regulations. And then theres the REAL elephant in the room - the price!
For me, I would buy a Hyundai IONIQ 5 N as a daily high performance EV, and find a nice 4-5 year old 911 for a weekend warrior. And i'd probably still have change in my pocket!

1/2 a ton-ish heavier it needs that extra horsepower but that wont' help the handling compared to old M5.
And as for the Blackpool illuminations inside, meh, you'll use them to show off, adds ZERO to the cars abilities and looks trashy.
I imagine now with new BS emission rules this sounds hardly like a v8 at all.
Nice car, but older version for me.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it'll probs have issues the minute its out of warranty, courtesy of the ecu knowing the cars warranty has elapsed, thermo plastic engine components going brittle after a couple of winters in uk. And the biggest one of all who needs more than 150bhp on uk roads, totally pointless getman moneypit.

New display effects remind me of those un-skippable cutscenes in video games nobody liked. Utterly pointless, especially when you just want to access the iDrive features for example checking engine oil level, next service interval, tyre monitor reset etc. Waiting an extra 4-5sec is a complete waste of time

Yeah, seems to be a common affliction with performance cars these days: too heavy, too 'digital' to be fun. What counts is how a car makes you feel, not gadgets and drive modes, etc. No doubt it would totally run rings around my C4 Corvette, but I figure I know which I'd rather take out and DRIVE.

Even Matt hardly finds something good in BMW now It is funny cuz he always supported them even when they were obviously worst than other brands. But honestly this brand is looking awefull, weights a lot and the interior is made for gen Z but Matt will be like actually the quality here is awesome
reply

They made fun in of the Mercedes CL65 in 2003 saying that 1000Nm is for trucks, now 21 years later they almost catch up with the help of electric.
15000/year what And you don't have a revolution
Weight must include the driver ay So 2500kg minimum

reply

It looks bloated and ugly, it is not about change. If the design were visually appealing and significantly lighter everyone would love it. It makes a good amount of hp and torque as well as tech, but its aesthetics are just kind of horrible.

I'm watching screens all day already, and the least I want from a car is some hateful back lit screens shooting photons at my face.
Why can't manufacturers give us an option of a fully analog interior We want dials and knobs!

reply

Why does no one do a launch and test when the battery is empty And mention chargespeed Yes most trips will be charged from home and go on short trips - but when you go on longer trips, what then Then it’s just a 545i (Bhp/t: 243)
reply

With all these new generation cars, i'm just hating all the German car brands at the moment. Disappointing, ugly and far overpriced due to false inflation. Germany is definitely ruining the European car market at the moment
reply

the New bmw m5 is not able to compare with the previous version because the New bmw m5 is actually the m3 and m4 xdrive. the New m5 is more like luxury product like the 7 series, but the m3 and m4 is more sport car
reply

It's the popular thing to do to hate every new BMW then in a few years when they change the model again everyone says the last model we hated was better than the new model we now hate.
Bring back the Bangle Butt!

reply

How many people talking crap have actually seen, been in, or bought the car It's a sedan, companies are making changes because of laws, don't behave like its the end of the world. Just one bad M5 Think about it
