Change your car with Carwow: The Golf R has been updated! VW’s famous pocket rocket has been updated in 2024, but are the changes enough to sway you away from competitors such as the S3, AMG A35 or M135 Well, let’s take a closer look. Starting with the design, it’s still clearly a Golf, but there are a few notable changes compared to the previous edition. You now have an illuminated VW badge sitting within the light bar stretching across the front. The lower bumper has also been redesigned and houses some real vents on either side. Along the side there are satin door mirrors and side skirts, while at the back there’s a redesigned bumper, updated taillights, and of course, quad tailpipes. On the inside, not much has been updated - but that’s not necessarily a bad thing! There’s blue stitching throughout, R-specific digital dials, and soft-touch materials throughout. The main change, though, is the large infotainment screen on the centre of the dash. It’s bright and looks smart, although it can be a bit laggy at times. In the back, there aren’t any changes of note - it’s pretty much the same as the previous edition. Under the bonnet, you have the same 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo as before. However, the power output has now been increased from 320hp to 333hp! It still comes with four-wheel drive and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. It’ll propel you to 60mph in just 4. 6 seconds. The new Golf R costs from 44, 500. So is it still the best hot hatch on the market for under 45, 000 Stick with Mat to see for yourself! Just stop trying again and again any kind of drifting/donuts with that garbage haldex permanent fwd, because it will never do, no matter how much they would lie in specification. that rear diff is sti as one from fiat panda 4x4. That haldex AND rear diff are unable to hold more than 180-200nm for only 30sec (after that will disangage rear axle due to overheating. Or if you want to prove me wrong, install manual haldex controller and activate 50/50 then drive as fast as you can on a mountain dry road for 30minutes. I recomment to have trailer with you
All i said is also available for audi BADGED version of it (any s3, rs3, a3, q3, etc)

The mistake VW made was to move away from the Mk2.
Nothing beats the Mk2 Golf for driveability, looks, driving enjoyment, ease of maintenance, genuine VWMS options, BBS splits on the options list, homologation versions, cult appeal and so on and so on and so on.
Nothing beats the Mk2 as a do-it-all car for all the people, all the time.
And a well driven Mk2 LTD keeps up with an R anyway, so no progress has been made, they’ve just made the cars heavier and slower and more numb.
Mk2 for life

The Golf R uses a torque vectoring system that can send more power to the rear wheels and specifically to the outer rear wheel during a drift. This helps induce oversteer and makes it easier to slide the rear end of the car, the electronic stability control is adjusted to allow more slip before it intervenes, giving you more control over the drift. but i think the sweet spot is to completly turn off stability with drift mode activated

I bought one MY 2024 and is 54k USD with tax. Not bad, actually. Fully loaded spec with DSG and with 19-inch wheels. My son stole it from me and he will be paying half of it. I will pay the other half and still be able to drive it from time to time. I told him this is for your high school graduation, your birthday and a new year present. :)

VW just doesn't know how to do a proper infotainment. First of all, the big fat bezels have big fat bezels. Second, there's cheap tacky piano black everywhere and third that screen looks like they just took a portable monitor and set it on the dashboard. There's no integration at all. It looks awful. Find yourself a mk 7.

I dont get why the still call themself VOLKWAGEN PeopleCar. with those prices they are far far far away from that. they price their car even over BMW nowadays. No wonder they have bad numbers and go down the drain. Even here in Germany, no one buys their new shit cars anymore (only dumb people still buy their cars)

we have the MK8. its seriously all the car you need. its super comfy and practical, and its also incredibly fun when you want to rip it. I cant justify upgrading to an audi or mercedes. yea those might feel a little nicer on the inside, but the R is just the best all arounder.

This brand will likely be dead within the next 10 years. Closed many of its most important factories in Europe siting energy cost as its main reason. If only there was a peace of paper we could sign that would allow the flow of cheap gas and fuel to flow back in Europe.

Screen size is fine. No visibility issues. I had my 8. 5 black edition R for 2 days before the virtual dial screen went blank. It’s been sitting with the dealer for 4 weeks now - no indication of when I’ll get it back. Something to be said for buttons and dials.

You need to be in special mode and then gearbox won't change up automatically. Also in the past 2 years I think I've only activated heated steering wheel once by accident. The touch buttons aren't as bad as everyone makes them out to be.

The Golf R is the car I've always wanted to love, just based on its performance alone. But could never get past it's outward appearance. Such a boring looking car. VW would have a clear winner here if they would only redesign the body lines

Only the side body airbags for the rear seats are optional. Like they have been for about 2 decades now in most non-premium cars. Even without the option selected you get 7 airbags, including side curtain airbags throughout.

Love the haptic buttons on my GTI Clubsport 45. Easy to clean and use. I wonder if people realise that the heated steering wheel comes on automatically when the outside temp is low and they are thinking they have hit the button

If I had enough money to buy the Golf R I'd never buy it. I lack a bad taste for car design and I don't fit the stereotype of the buyer in my country (young man earning a lot of money out of working on not-so legal activities)
reply

Lited front badge No! Not on any car. This is literally the opposite of debadging Also I think you overlooked something with the optional airbag for those who want to pull out the back seat and throw in a roll cage.

I always thought the golf I had was almost perfect - comfortable, great handling, a surprising amount of room inside. All it really needed was more power. So, it seems like the R is pretty much perfect.
reply

Having a golf mk 8, I can’t stand the way everyone says you accidentally press the heated steering wheel button. Nearly three years I’ve had the car, and I have never accidentally pressed it.

When a new Golf comes out it is always so exciting to see what it looks like. Then the excitement is over as it looks like every previous Golf. Easiest job in the world = Golf designer/copier.
reply

I thought the R was getting the normal buttons and not the dumb touch buttons. I was looking forward to selling my Mk7 GTI to get a new Rthat’s a dealbreaker to me so I guess I’ll keep waiting.
reply

I honestly can't buy a car that doesn't have knobs and switches for climate control. Diving into touch screen sub menus while driving at night on the highway in the rain, it's not possible for me
