Does a performance air filter give you more power? I fitted one to my Porsche 911 to find out! Chris: THANK YOU! Finally someone puts a car on the dyno to find out what is REALLY going on! I put a -High performance- filter in my 996 (Got it for $20 on Ebay) Oiled cotton with mesh like a K&N. The trick is to NOT oil the filter. it is the oil that restricts the flow. So wash it and do not re oil it. BTW we used to put bikes on the dyno to test after market mods esp. exhausts and 8 out of ten of them LOST horsies! Hah! AND what about these idiots who think that a new grill or blue tooth app is a performance modification? ALSO: Remove your rear seats on the 996. you save 22 lbs. (in the rear of a rear engine car) Power to weight my friend and it's FREEE!

The point is: the aftermarket filter (K&N) lets more air go through. But, only the manufacturer knows exactly the right amount of air which must go through the airbox at each rotational speed in order to maximize the power.
More air doesn't necesarrily mean more power (it causes a dryer mixture, since more fuel should also be injected.
This is especially true when the airbox has a very complex shape.
The only real advantage of an aftermerket filter is economical, since it doesn't need periodic replacement.

Mighty car mods did these tests years ago, so has engineering explained. A 3% power increase on those first runs was a rounding error and would never be felt on the road. The only benefits to aftermarket filters are, they are reusable, thus saving money eventual on services and more filtration, which can cause a lower power figure. All the Honda rice boys out there that claim they feel a difference when they put on pod filters are crying. Also, careful of over oiling the filter lest ye grenade an engine.

I drive an f56 mini cooper s which with the oem filter actually hit 208bhp & after fitting a k&n panel filter dropped to 198 bhp but with such a negligible drop the increased noise, especially windows up believe it or not was well worth it &im convinced the throttle response is improved and there really does seem to be more popping on the over-run! I have an induction kit en rout & am really really interested to get it dynod again &really try put this to bed once & for all, awesome content. Cheers

When you first put the bmw on dyno at 6: 00 I was noticing how steady it was and just then you said that a nice smooth curve I was noticing how steady the car was on the machine itself. Seemed real smooth. Nice video thanks for posting. And yes it seems these usually give some slight power increase but mostly people keep them on because like them I like the sound better.

The IMS is not as much to worry about if you're regularly running the engine at highish RPM. That's because the bearing was designed to be lubricated when the oil pressure gets nice and high and your oil splashes around with some obviously making its way into the bearing.
Like any bearing (as opposed to a regular transaxle) the IMS does not like to be spun while dry.

I have a 997 Carrera. Fitted a K-N and for a about 2 years I kept chasing an check engine light. Multiple issues, including vacuum leaks, but the final fix was to put back a standard air filter and put in a new mass airflow. My understanding was the oil from the filter can contaminate the MAF. Either way, this caused my engine check light so beware.

The performance filter's major advantage is that it's reusable, can be cleaned and re-oiled. Though I think if it had a tune to compensate for the improved airflow, he would have seen a larger gain over the paper one. The one disadvantage is they don't filter as well as the paper element, which over time will increase engine wear.

Was there a Dyno run done on the BMW before the mods?
If it wasn't then you have no idea what the performance gains are. It needs to be tested before and after and on the same Dyno with preferably similar weather conditions to be a conclusive test. The standard car may have made higher than manufacturers power as standard.

Love this 911, I have drove one, witch hade soft tuning, was accelerating so brutal and nice.
For that air filter, you should had to drive the car for at least 20 miles, so that the computer can make the fuel trimming adjustment. Otherwise, he would not know, what's with the sudden changes in the air volume.
