This is the new Volkswagen Polo GTI. For years the Polo GTI has been stuck in the shadow of its older, more powerful Golf GTI brother - but is 2018 the year the Polo can start to hold its own? Join Mat as he takes a closer look at this new Volkswagen mini hot hatch to find out how it stacks up against the competition

Mmmmm be careful the basic polo GTI is light on equipment, spec it up and it-s expensive, you only have to look at the cars coming back on the market, no sat nav, no cruise control, that shocking red dash trim. Small wheels which look like shopping trolly wheels, that said unless you need the size of the golf( not many) this is a better car, more economical, cheaper to ensure, easier to live with just as quick (as entry level golf Gti) just don-t get a low spec, resale value will be hit hard and nobody wants them.

I got this car on a leasing deal, and I've had some rather unsettling issues with it.
Apperantly the particle filter needs to regenerate at times, and when it does so, the fuel consumption will go up by roughly 2, 5 times.
The car also makes all sort of noices while it's regenerating. happens every other 1000 km, and I drive around 150 km a day (75km each way for work.
The dealship ment that is totally normal, if thats the case - I'd avoid this and get the Ford ST.

Only recently bought a second hand VW Polo GTi 5(6c) 1. 8T 2016 3 dr as a daily driver. WOW! The looks, Fantastic front, Interior is smart and VW! The -Response- Outstanding and back to the -Hot Hatch- days. The VW Polo GTi since has lost something. A -Manual Drivers- gearbox, which leaves the (6c) -for ME. The model to have. Bring back the Manual Polo GTi and that front and I would buy again. I also own a 2018 124 Spider, cracking value for money Sports car. Cheers

I have always wanted VW to offer the Polo in the US. Unfortunately, we always get screwed out of the best VW models like the recently departed Scirocco, new Touareg, and even the engines/transmissions we get are downgraded (i. e. no dual injection (port and direct injection, Arteon is stuck with an Aisin 8-speed automatic instead of DSG, and our cars always have less power such as the Golf GTI still being saddled with only 228HP vs. the EU Golf GTI at 241.

Nearly every point raised about this current model Polo GTI is the same as every other Polo GTI? If you've seen even the Polo GTI from the early 00s, most of the interior styling points you highlight are the same. Especially from the 2010 version, it's same same. I'd even argue that the 2010-2014 twin-charged 1. 4 is more fun than the 2. 0 turbo.

The only problem I have with the Polo (apart from the fact it's only available with 5 doors, as Matt pointed out, is that you don't have the option of a manual gearbox! Mental. It's an option on the non-GTI versions, so how hard could it have been for VW to make it available for the GTI? It's exactly the sort of car you'd want a manual in!

Excellent car! A classic VW.
The first thing, that I stared at, is this lovely Boeing 747 from Olympic Airlines on the background. Such a glorious airline, and another example of how a couple of corrupted governments can destroy a healthy public airline.
Keep goin' Matt! We love you.
Greeting from Athens, Greece.

Here in Brazil we've got a GTS version of the Polo fitted with a 1. 4 TSI. The design is pretty much the same but we don't get those 18's nor the lowered suspension; the steering wheel is also different and we've got more red details on the inside. That lil' buddy there might be a rocket on a 2. 0 TSI.

I have had my Polo GTi+ for a year now. Previous car was a 7. 5 Golf GTi and my other car is a T Roc R. I do love the Polo, but you can certainly feel that they have dialled it down. It-s like they went, oh crap this is as good as a Golf GTi, we can-t have that.
