New 900hp Lotus: Faster than BMW & Porsche!

Lotus has been around for 75 years and is widely known for releasing small petrol-powered sports cars like the Elise. However, in more recent times it s turned its attention to electric cars, including the Emira & Evija sports cars and the Eletre SUV. All three cars have been released to critical acclaim, and Lotus is now turning its attention to an all-electric saloon. However, this is no normal saloon - it s likely to produce more power and be cheaper than market-leading saloons such as the AMG E63 S! But how do we know this? Well for starters, it s been confirmed that Lotus is working on a saloon. And it s also been confirmed that it will share the same platform as used in the Eletre SUV. However, we also know that an Eletre R is due in the future, which is set to come with dual electric motors to produce an incredible 918hp - making it one of the fastest electric SUVs in the world! What s more, we also know that the Eletre starts from under 90, 000, with the Eletre R costing around 120, 000. So given that a saloon is likely to be cheaper to build than an SUV, it s fair to assume that a saloon built on the same platform may come in slightly cheaper, which would make it more powerful and quicker than the 140, 000+ Taycan Turbo S!

Oh vanity and speed, what a worthless creed,
Wasting resources & electricity without heed,
Super cars with horsepower galore,
Their purpose, to show off and nothing more.
While children in India and Africa.
Lack education, basic needs & a future,
We indulge in this pointless race,
Spending our money on cars that are a disgrace.
What good is speed without a destination,
What use is power without contribution,
Let's redirect our efforts to a noble cause,
Helping those in need, without a pause.
For vanity and speed are fleeting trends,
But kindness and generosity never end,
Let's invest in what truly matters,
And make the world a better place, forever after.

There's good news and bad news for us car nuts and it's simple.
The good news is not all manufacturers are building waste of money only SUVs, and we've got some saloons and estates coming thankfully!
However, there's bad news too. These new saloons and estates, even the non electric ones, are just going to be so expensive, least reliable like the old days and just a bit too technical! And that could mean these new cars could only be for oh wealthy people only, and not everyone is wealthy! Hopefully there's some luck, and I love the new Lotus saloon car idea!

It doesn t matter what it kills, it s still just a Lotus = s a diminutive & unreliable English car. Lotus is like Alfa Romeo, it s sweet until it breaks down & prey you don t get in an accident or be carried by 6!
A BMW is a very high quality/reasonably reliable & very safe vehicle that one can get in a serious collision in & walk away.
Good luck surviving a serious accident in a Lotus! No thanks yesterday or ever on a Lotus.
English mediocrity. I hope Lucas doesn t make the ignition,
My ancestors left on the Mayflower for good reasons.

Call me a dinosaur but a huge part of a car's appeal to me is the noise it makes. To date, the McMurtry is the only non-ICE car I've been truly excited about.
With Lotus' new strategy, save the Emira, it goes against what I always thought the company stood for in designing lightweight, nimble cars as reducing weight was deemed the single best way to improve a car's performance. Now all the engineering looks like it is made to deal with the added weight of the batteries and to satisfy the marketing team to promote 2, 000bhp figures.

reply

Honestly back then I got excited about every new car that got announce for reasons like engine layout, sound, gearbox, performance
Nowadays with all these electric cars everything does 0-100 sub 3 sec and they are all basically the same
Back then u went for a better noise and experience over interior
Now the interoir is everything I actually choose between cause the exterior will get more similar as they want to make them range efficient

So. It's a milkfloat then.
M5s are for cross Europe blasts. Considering the HOURS of recharging, a 1990s M5 would likely be way faster across Europe. I know this will have new tech for fast charging, but out in the wild? Public chargers can't charge current milkfloats at their stated max charge rate, so unless Lotus are re-engineering Europe's charging infrastructure, it's going to lose. In fact my Mk1 Focus would likely be quicker across Europe.

reply

This ain't killing anything. The only possible M5 Killer in the future is the upcoming (possibly 2024) Maserati Quattroporte Trofeo, which will replace both its predecessor and the Ghibli, will probably be very few centimeters longer than the 5 series. It should be based on the Giorgio platform (from the Alfa Giulia and Stelvio, Grecale, new Granturismo. Should have the new Nettuno V6, maybe even the full F154 V8 if they manage with emissions.

I'm extremely excited about a Porsche Taycan GT(3) model. I guess this will be less powerful than the Lucid and also the Model S Plaid, but it'll outperform both by far.
Porsche always deliver. The 911 Turbo S was an absolutely beast at that time and I guess the new Taycan will be the same in the BEV World like the Turbo S in the ICE non hybrid world.

This English Brand - Yep and like pretty much every English brand no longer own by the English. Lotus was part of Proton from Malaysia, Now owned by China's Geely. Such a sad state of affairs. As for the headline Faster than BMW and Porsche - Come on like speed is the only thing that sells cars. Stop the click bait and do what you do best, great reviews.

Build car faster easy! I think? BMW can do it
But never do. think! Why, just press the hose power big! That not mean best, all big manufacturers can do it!
Quality. Comfort, and handle as important than fasted
Don t build the car for just fastest but build the car with no problem +services for owner just some thought

reply

And it absolutly aligns with the philosophy of the company's founder: small, light-weight car, not too much power, a light and raw driving experience hence not too much comfort.
Always great when a company is lead with respect and dignity and doesn't sell out to go the ordinary way!

reply

Congrats Matt and team. As a die hard multiple Lotus owner have zero interest in anything electric they are doing. Much more excited by other companies hydrogen and synthetic fuel development but, if electric sales help Lotus offer a hardcore Emira then all for them.
reply

Collin Chapman is spinning in his grave because of what he is seeing what Geely is doing with Lotus, it really pisses me of. Lotus should be producing small, light and nimble sports cars, not heavy super EV's who can compete against BMW, Porsche and Audi.
reply

At the moment it's slow, but the movement is clearly in place. 500bhp for standard BEVs and 2, 000bhp for performance BEVs. Hyper ICE cars now will look so slow in 20 years. As for nonsense toys like GR Yaris, they will simply not age well.
reply

Unfortunately Lotus nowadays is nothing more than Chinese electric car. Don t get me wrong, Geely EV cars are OK, but not outstanding. Geely runs design studios in Sweden (Polstar) and UK (Lotus, but tech underneath is Geely.
