Now there s one thing about this new Amarok that really sets it apart from its predecessor. Underneath the skin, it s pretty much a Ford Ranger! VW has just gone to work on it, adding some new body panels and updating some of the interior, but otherwise, it s pretty much just a Ranger! But either way, let s see if this is one pick-up that you need to consider. Starting with the design, it s clear from the rear that the Amarok brought in new body panels over the Ranger as you have a big Amarok wording embossed into the tailgate. We also have the Pan Americana trim on this edition, so we get some smart metal bars that sit along the edge of the load bed. Along the side, there are running boards, and upfront, the Pan Americana trim means we have a matte dark grey effect running through the bottom of the grille, which really adds to the imposing look of this pick-up. Step inside and the familiarity with the Ranger becomes clear. The centre console and infotainment set-up are identical, with a big vertical screen in the centre of the dash. All-in-all the cabin is pretty well made, with soft-touch materials throughout the cabin. The infotainment system has been taken across from the Ranger, which is a good thing! Although, despite the Amarok coming with some physical buttons, you still have the use the touchscreen to control the climate. When it comes to engine choices, there are three options. The entry-level is a 2-litre turbo diesel that can deliver 170hp and comes with a manual gearbox. Next up is a 2-litre turbo diesel that comes with a 10-speed automatic gearbox, with the ability to deliver 205hp. But the range-topper is a 3-litre V6 turbo diesel, which also comes with a 10-speed automatic gearbox, along with the ability to produce 240hp. The price of the new Amarok starts from around 41, 000, rising all the way up to around 57, 000 for this top-of-the-range model. But is it worth it? Or should you go for a Hill or Ranger instead? You ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

Are you sure about the lack of availability of the Raptor s rear coil springs? The top Adventura model has the Raptor s reduced payload of around 650kgs which makes me suspect that it has coils but with a luxury road emphasis rather than sporty offroad as with Raptor. The disadvantage of the reduced payload is that it prevents HMRC classifying them as dual purpose vehicles which means that they do not qualify for VAT repayment which immediately makes them uncompetitive for VAT registered business buyers.
All variants are limited to 10mph lower speed limits than cars or car-derived vans on UK ordinary roads and dual carriageways, respectively down to 50mph on A and lesser roads and 60 on dual carriageways. They can all do 70 on motorways of course unless otherwise indicated or towing a trailer.

I think you can't help noticing that it's a Ranger, this side already delivers. even the front side already reminds me of the Volks design. but at least on the German one you can tell it's new and not just another restyling as it happens in the Ranger. it may not even have been bad only when they point out that it is a new generation I really hope that it is all new and in the Ford it seems that only the front design is new, and the side panels, but they just being readjusted with a new format, I don't doubt that the whole structure is the same and in my view this can't be considered new!

Agricultural is not an apt analogy in this day and age where tractors have far more sophisticated transmissions and programmable functions than any car you can think of, plus suspended cabs, air suspended heated and ventilated seats with suspension up, down, side to side and fore and aft, front and some also have rear axle suspension, really quiet climate controlled cabs and so on and on. Maybe it would be more correct to use third world or prehistoric than agricultural as a discription of crude engineering and lack of refinement.

I heard the Ford 3. 0 V6 diesel engine has some crank shaft issues like breaking under load is their any truth to this? Is it the same engine they put in the Land Rover? I have driven the latest Raptor 3. 0 petrol V6 10 speed and it drives well, I have at present the 2. 0 twin turbo 10 speed ranger and it s a great truck seen these with 250k on the clock which surprised me. We are in NZ thanks with the review.

That parking assist thing that only triggers when you go backwards is one of the most annoying things i've ever encountered in my life. My Renault Megane does that, if you go forward the parking sensors only trigger if you go really slowly and almost hit something. Also, there's no button to manually turn them on, they replaced it with the auto park feature (who even uses that.

Mat, can I ask why there was an 'obscuring thing' over the screen as you were in the process of telling us about it. I refer firstly to the 2 minute 39 second mark, but it appears again. Is this some kind of embargo thingy from VW? Because it's the Ford system? Just asking as it seems a bit odd to see in one of your marvelous videos.

Yet another example of The current VW management getting it so so wrong. Just like their whole ev range, it's a ford so just buy a ford 8nsted of rebadged nonsense they will probably sell as many as thay do the half arsed EVs. I use to be a hardcore VW fan but the current lineup is terrible and expensive what a shame

The VW Amarok is a great Pickup Truck, at least the previous Models are and you see them everywhere here in the Bavarian Alps, often used off-road and to carry Timber etc.
Hope this one is also or at least just as great as the previous Models

If you really need to adjust climate control off-road, which I seriously doubt, then just use the rather good voice control. Press the button on the steering wheel or optionally use the wake word and just say set temperature 19 or whatever you fancy. Job done without even looking down and re-focussing twice.

vw has nothing to do with lederhosen (lehehehderhosen, not layderhosen. lederhosen is a typical bavarian thing only. vw is from the north of germany. so the only brands where this joke would make sense are bmw and maybe audi. you cant even get your jokes right, mat, let alone pronounciation. fail.

In south africa, most of these pick up trucks spend most of their life transporting the kids to school and going around town. That sort of stuff. These kind of vehicles are now bought to be used as you would use any other normal car.
People don't offroad them much

reply

The fact that it's built in South Africa says a lot about how sought after the Amarok is in Europe. They rather build it in SA because they sell more there and then they ship a few to the old continent if someone is crazy enough to buy this instead of a Toyota hilux.
reply

The reason why its that refined is because we(South Africans) like pretending like we actually use these bakkies(pickup) off-road when really we just zip around the cities in them. We just like the fact that we can go off-road if we actually have to.
reply

Matt yes. I know exactly what you mean and that truck is gonna suffer in SA. you should see the town it gets built in. tough place, horrid roads. also not many people use dash cams, it will just get stolen if you forget it in the car for 5 minutes

(IMO) your vids are just timeless quality the pickup is the best to review for a idea, Remember: Its just My own Opinion on the suggestion, Advice; Try getting used to making a opinion on a topic youre interested in works for me works for anybody.

What surprised me was in an Australian comparison they said that the most comfortable one in the backseat is the Amarok while the Ranger was only third in the question. I just didn't really enjoy this console and the Volks panel!

Creating another source of income in these difficult times is the best thing to do not only does it guarantee returns, it also helps you plan and save for future expenses I hope everyone who reads this will be successful in life

The moaning mirrors are a common issue thats just caused by dirt and grime. Some compressed air should clean out the mechanism and make it quiet.
Our Ranger had the same problem and was easily solved by doing the above

Great to see you reviewing practical cars that you see more people buying (i. e. New A Class, Prius and now this. I don't know if this is irrelevant in the UK but a tow test from a few 4WD's would be cool to watch.
reply

There are plenty of pick up trucks build in South Africa for local and export markets, including the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Nissan Navara, Isuzu D Max, and Mahindra also has local assembly of some pick ups.
