Tesla Model 3 v BYD Seal: DRAG RACE

We ve got our hands on the Tesla Model 3 Long Range, and it s facing off against one of the newest small electric cars around - the BYD Seal! So let s see whether this all-new Chinese EV can take down the Tesla. Under the skin, you ll find two electric motors that provide 530hp and 670Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels, and it tips the scales at 2, 055kg. If you were looking to pick one up, it d set you back around 48, 000. Then we come to the Tesla. It also comes with dual electric motors, and these should provide you with 490hp and 490Nm of torque. This power is sent to all four wheels, and it s a fair bit lighter than the BYD, weighing in at 1, 840kg. It s slightly more expensive, though, costing around 50, 000.

You didn't set up the BYD Seal properly - so it's a flawed video. There's a Lap Timer mode on the instrument cluster; when I tested, it made a massive difference in the 0-60mph times - 4. 3s down to 3. 89s. I'm not sure why either, as it was never explained to us at the press event, but having done multiple launches with the option enabled and disabled, I can safely say it does make a difference; note, I use Racelogic Performance Box Touch with an external GPS unit to ensure accuracy (I didn't rely on the data shown via the BYD's instrument cluster.
Nonetheless, I'm glad my own tests of both vehicle's braking performance match. The Model 3 LR H really does struggle.

Am i the only one that thinks the model 3 tesla looks like a fat egg. I don't understand how anyone looks at the car and thinks thats a dope car' the headlights look like a weird chinese fish. Those rims look like cheap plastic, so uglyyyy. It looks like an AI generated car its just dull and basic. Not aggresive or futuristic looking. It legit looks like it could be a mall cop car overall no one would ever double take or take a pic of that car. It looks like basic traffic. Not sleek or aggresive looking at all. The interior is super plan jane too.

That BYD blade LFP battery pack is exceptional! You can put a nail though it without causing it to catch fire via thermal runaway - super impressive design. I think those battery packs will outlive the electric cars honestly with like 400-500+ thousand miles before they die out.

On paper, the Seal having a 3, 8 0-100 time, compared to the Teslas 4, 4, one would have expected a clear victory for the Seal. However, not. Well done, Tesla!
Guess we all know what will happen when next generation performance will join the game.

Argh you could've downloaded the Acceleration boost for the Tesla, you know for scientific purposes.
You can get a refund within 48hrs.
The result would see the M3 smoke the Seal by over a car length i would say.

The model 3 LR has 320kW of power. It s limited by BMS. With Aceleration boost up to 350kW.
The 366kW on papers it s the sum of both engines, and they do not deliver maximum power at the same time.

I love your videos. No problem there. I know I can calculate myslef the equivalent of Miles in KM but it would be nice to see if we can have the both values on screen for the elecrtic cars.

There's no need for a race. Top speed of the BYD Seal is limited at 180kmh, much lower than the Model 3. Even if both cars reach 180kmh at the same time, the BYD Seal can't go faster than that.

Can we have another test for Driving EVs Across UK until They Die challenge, but this time with Sam, Matt and Yianni. The banter is just marvellous between these fellas.

The clunk sounds come from the breaks realising all their tension, going Ahhhhh, after finally being used after all the regenerative breaking.
All guys can relate I guess

I'm very disappointed that an experienced motor journalist like Mat doesn't know that the Lamborghini models are named after the bulls' names and not their breeds.

Come on Carwow only another 10k subs to equal Top Gear (still upset they sacked Jezza, Richard and Captain Slow because they ruined my Sunday evenings.

Elon always wins. Both are more or less the same. Good bit of kits. Let the EV Revolution begin. Ai will facelitate humans not replace. So don't worry.

Not a chance the Tesla LR is 490hp more like 380-410. Perhaps if you bought the software unlock for acceleration boost it will be up at 450-460 ish.

Dodge VIPER, Hyundai PONY, Fiat PANDA, VW Beetle, Chevvy IMPALA, Corvette STINGRAY, AC Cobra, Hillman HUSKY, Reliant ROBIN/KITTEN, Triumph STAG.

Can think of a couple not mentioned vw beetle. Chevy corvette stingray dodge viper. Ford puma or raptor think mainly American cars

BYD definitly has more power and torque for the lower speeds and the Tesla definitly has much better Aerodynamics for the higher speeds!

Can Teslas talk now? This must make traffic very interesting, I would use it to shout at the idiots who keep blocking the left lane.

Tesla took out a lot of the snap in the Highland refresh, it's quite sad. My 2022 LR AWD was much quicker on the throttle than the 2024.
reply

This comparison is not really equal. The top version of BYD (AWD excellence) vs the middle version of the Tesla, the dual motor.
