Compare the best new & used car deals with Carwow: Just why is the Volkswagen T-Roc so popular! Since first unveiling the T-Roc just 6 years ago VW has sold more than 112, 000 T-Rocs in just the UK alone! In fact, in just 2023 alone, more T-Rocs were sold in the UK than the combined number of Polestar, Genesis, Bentley, Alfa Romeo, Jeep & Subarus sold in the same year! Well, Mat’s about to take a closer look to see just what makes the T-Roc so popular. Some things are fairly obvious, such as the design. It may be a pretty standard crossover SUV, but it comes with a good few design cues to help it stand out. It’s also pretty well built, so even just opening and closing the doors helps the car feel solid. What’s more, its small size means it’s pretty easy to drive around town, and helps even the more cautious driver squeeze through smaller gaps and into small parking spaces. However, it’s not all rosy. For example, while the entry-level T-Roc isn’t too expensive, costing around 28, 000, the price can easily rise up into the mid-40, 000! The car we have here, for example, isn’t even the top-spec car, but with a couple of options added it costs north of 41, 000! When you consider what other family-friendly cars you can pick up for that price, we’re not sure if they offer the best value for money! And while it’s ok to drive in town, once you hit a dual carriageway or country road, the pick-up and responsiveness of the gearbox and engine leaves a little bit to be desired. There’s also a lack of hybrid engine options, too! So will Mat think it’s good value for money Or will he choose an alternative instead Stick around and see for yourself! I have one as a rental car at the moment (didn't chose it, was 'upgraded' to it. My resumee so far: An utter turd. On bumpy roads there is rattling inside the doors. Once a week Bluetooth fails with Error for no apparent reason and only resumes operation after a complete shutdown. Android and Carplay integration is an utter mess and unreliable. The car is constantly beeping at me for not having BOTH hands on the steering wheel. Speaking of the steering wheel: It transfers so much vibration that my hands get numb. Squeaky wipers. Haven't found a way to disable the adaptive feature of the cruise control, but that might be a case of RTFM. Other drivers flashed at me on multiple occasions which indicates to me that the headlight seem to blind the other traffic.

I will say one reason it could be selling well is the fact the current Golf and other hatchbacks and sedans have gotten way to low for their own good and aren't practical for many people anymore. Look at the MK 1 Golf. It looks to have more ground clearance than even the T Roc. Now Golf's are slammed to the ground for no reason. These are suppose to be basic commuter cars. Yet automakers make them low and impractical to navigate poor quality roads thus among other reasons pushing consumers in areas with poor infrastructure to crossovers. The ride height and better roof lines are also selling points. However this car does seem to be lacking in those.

I own a Golf Mk 7, and once in a while I get a T-Roc as replacement car while my Golf is in for service. It is worse in every sense. It doesn't ride as good. It feels less sporty. It feels cheaper inside. Space isn't that much better, if at all. It is less comfortable. It just isn't as good as a Golf, because it tries to be a SUV. And it costs more!

Hi I’ve been thinking about them I like the look of them but on your review it’s put me off I drive a 2012 vw golf 2. 0 gt manual deisel with 110, 000 miles 62 mpg only car I’d change it for as I’ve had these before is bmw 520/530 deisel se or business edition auto otherwise I’ll keep the golf great review Matt

I recently had one of these as a rental. Why you wouldn't buy a Ford Focus, Skoda Octavia or a BMW 3-Series Touring for a bit more instead is beyond my comprehension. It is the most unforgettable, average driving experience I've ever had. And there are so many of these nowadays, I call them the rats of city roads.

Have to agree with you on the engine / gearbox. I have an Audi Q3 40TFSI and the 35 TFSI suffers from the exact same automatic gearbox issue and to be honest, even the 40 TFSI isn’t perfect. Going manual does solve the issue and also the 40 TDI is probably the sweet spot. Live and learn.

I like the look of the T-Roc but chose karoq 1. 5 dsg instead as I preferred the karoq. Spot on the gearbox and engine comment. Not a major issue in normal driving but ask to car to do something quick like accelerate and you get delay and wheel spin. A friend has golf with same issues.
reply

the problem with the gas pedal is that its an electronic gas pedal so it has a delay before it actually notices that you gave more gas
i got a stage 1 on my Troc R and had them do the throttle response to and i now have 0 deadspot if i mash the pedal it instantly revs up

Carwow: I was just about to buy it. but I came across Hyundai Tucson 2. 0 D 190 HP AWD. I was amazed of how more spaceous ir is, has a much much higher build quality and much much higher reliability. while also looking much much better than this puny t-roc.

Matt is right about the DSG7 gearbox. I have the same on my Yeti and it's the car's only major flaw. The 1. 5 second lag is borderline dangerous until you learn to make allowances. VW must be aware of this flaw but they have never rectified it.

for me i like the Troc becouse it feels more like the Golf 7 then the Golf 8 and i think the Golf 7 was better built with better material and better layout the golf 8 feels abit cheap with it lack of buttons in the cabin and things like that

Anyone like me still happily driving a Suzuki Swift 2013 GLX I don't think I'll ever need a dashboard infotainment system, or reverse camera, or adaptive cruise control (I love normal cruise control though, . Am I outdated

If that rubbish scratchy plastic interior is still there. and those basic options are an extra for that final price. Do not count on my and my every day more reduced economic capacity, Volks Wagen hahaha

It's easier for old people to get in and out of the car, because it's a bit higher than for example the Golf. That's why it sells so good. And older people have more money and can buy new cars.
reply

The main reason they sold so few Golfs is because they aren't building them. Near 2 year wait for a golf is not uncommon. I ordered one but cancelled it after a few months and no delivery date

I once owned a Ford Mondeo diesel with the dual clutch gearbox and it sounds like this car has similar issues. The gearbox was horrible and the engine was laggy. Terrible combination.

Pretty sure i read this is built on the Polo not the Golf Doesnt look like the Golf dashboard. Thats defo the Polo dashboard/screen. Top of the door scratchy like the Polo as well.

The Nissan Qashqai is a much better option, for this size SUV. It has more kit as standard. It is certainly cheaper, but is better quality. And I personally think it looks better.
reply

it's a cheap feeling car for a very high price, so either ppl are fanboys and buy whatever VW throws at ehm, or VW dealers give enormous discounts, which make up for the high price
reply

I guess it’s right size right market, in the US the Atlas sells the best for big Americans. Europe has always loved the Golf so a lifted version of it makes sense
