How to Change a Thermostat in a PT Cruiser

The PT Cruiser thermostat is easy to replace. If your car is overheating but you have plenty of coolant then this might be your problem. To change the thermostat all you have to do is unbolt the radiator fill cap and you have fast access. It is not the easiest thermostat to get to but it isnt bad. It could also be due to a bad head gasket which is what happened to mine. If the video was helpful, remember to give it a thumbs up and consider subscribing. New videos every Thursday -Website

Follow this instruction (you'll see how to do plugs and wires when you lift the intake properly, adds about 10 minutes. There is 5 bolts for the upper to lower intake manifold. Undo those and take them out. Undo the Airbox cover and the tube to Throttle Body, take it off. You will see a brass colored 13mm bolt underneath the throttle body. Take that out. On the back side there is a 13mm and an 8mm bolt holding on the EGR tube to the manifold. Take those out. You can then lift the upper intake manifold up and secure it with a bungie or rope to the hood (easiest way without disconnecting all the vacuum, cables, and connectors. You can then see the thermostat housing/filler neck. Take out the two bolts and the t-stat is under there. Change it out, make sure it is oriented that same as the old one. Then reverse the steps to put it back together. Fill up the Coolant, make sure it bleeds out any air. fill up the overflow and check to see if it overheats.

Chris I hope you know how many lives you have touched and changed for the better. Its so nice to see older videos compared to your later ones and how far you yourself have came.
Thanks to you I have saved thousands on maintenance and repairs on my 98 k1500 Suburban. You have increased my skill set soooo much in an area I had always wanted to improve on. I have replaced rotors, calipers, bled the brakes, drum brakes, replaced altenators, thermostats, a/c recharges, tie rod replacements, etc etc ALL THANKS TO YOU (Not trying to brag, trying to illustrate his talent for helping explain car repairs in an easy to follow but extremely thorough and top notch way.
Keep it up Chris and I hope life is treating you well and know how much you have changed this world for the better.

My wife's PT Cruiser is acting up. The heater doesn't blow hot air. That has been going on for a week or two. The temperature has always been normal or even slightly lower. It doesn't change when it is idling or driving. The water is topped off on the radiator and reservoir, so it isn't that. I was thinking the thermostat, but usually the temp will rise when the car is idling and cool as it is driving, and it isn't doing that. I was thinking the water pump is failing to move water, but I am not sure because I figured the car would overheat. Today we had a really hot day, and it did actually overheat, but that was just today. I was thinking the system may be clogged too. I just don't know. Does anyone have an idea?

ok so i just changed my fiance's thermo. at 5: 43 there is a skinny braided looking cord near your finger and tool near the radiator cap. It's also the same cord behind your tool at 2; 29 While I was installing the thermo, I tried to move it out the way. and gasoline leaked out. I am curious what line did I break? it looks as if I truly snapped it, the snap of hard plastic happened. pl, ease, anyone, what did I break? >? /?
pls help me

Dear Chris fix. We would like a video replacing a time belt and a water pump on a chrysler pt cruiser. It is really difficult and there is no actual and clear video on how To do it exactly. It is very expensive and difficult work and if you can teach us we would be grateful! Thank you. Keep up the Good work!

My GFs cruiser began overheating a few days ago, but I haven't had the chance to really look into it yet. Other than a bad thermostat, I know other possible causes could be the fan and water pump. Does anyone have any good suggestions on where to start looking and possible symptoms of each? Thanks.

My question is after getting the hoses off there was no liquid (coolant) came out, is that bad? The reserviour is full. I need answer asap. I am 67 year old female doing this on my own. (I also got the bolts off. Could it be something other than thermostat issue?

Heads up to everyone- I put a MotoRad Failsafe Thermostat in my 03 PT and it 'Failed' and stuck open within the first 24 hours causing P0128 to pop on the dash. I'd heavily suggest getting a regularly thermostat and not the Failsafe.

My coolant reservoir empties out after I fill it, but the radiator is very full after I remove the cap to check. Its not overheating at all. Runs normally in middle position. My cold air doesnt work too. Could it be the thermostat?

Im assuming that PT cruiser belongs to your family member. Ive read many bad review about that car but I take it with a grain of salt. Yes they are a huge pain to work on but if you take care of the car it will take care of you.
