Important Question. I have an old Durango that I want to use for a few months for commuting to a job site then will get rid of it. It is 4x4 and I just had the transfer case basically explode. The case just broke apart, the metal drive belt is off the front driveshaft, the driveshaft is laying on the top of the skid plate. I am wondering, If I remove the metal belt and remove the front driveshaft, can I just drive the Durango in 2wD? Will this cause any harm to the transmission? I do not see any damage to the transmission and it is not leaking any fluid, the housing on the transfer case just came apart. Chris or anyone here knows? I was not in 4x4 at the time of the failure and had just drained and refilled the fluid in the case a couple days prior to the failure, not sure If I messed something up, I put the proper fluid, maybe I tightened the drain plug and fill plug too tight and started a microfracture? Anyway, Could I remove the belt and shaft and drive it that way without any further damage to the transmission or rear driveshaft? I do not care about the transfer case or 4x4, Like I said I am getting rid of the vehicle at the end of the summer. I just do not know a lot about the mechanics of the Transmission/transfer case.

Hey Chrisfix, my front axels are grinding and I thought it needed gear oil so I put some in and the grinding noise aint really go away and now Im thinking its stuck in 4WD cause itll barely go the speed limit without it grinding and normally my truck jumps out of 4x4 but it hasnt recently and today I put in 4x4 hit it in reverse and hit it in drive and it felt the same when it was in 2wd then I switched it back to that hit it in reverse and when I hit it in drive it jumped out of it and was driving normally till I turned around and hit it again it started grinding again and idk whats wrong with it now

In a pinch, I have put the transfer fluid/diff oil in a big plastic bottle with a pump on top like hand lotion (after cleaning it out throughly and making sure it was dry) to add to the diff/transfer case. It can be a pain to hold the hose and the pumping device and the plastic bottle all at the same time.

I am guessing that this Mazda truck is a 1994? The same as my 1994 Ford Explorer. Because Fords in 1995 have the drain plug NOT behind the dampener, but to the left of it. This is not important to your video, so you may delete my comment if I am wrong.

Hey Chris my dad had to change his transfer case two times because it went out on him that costed a lot of money and was expensive when he had to pay the mechanic and then know his transmission went out he has a 99 GMC 4x4 automatic 4wd truck!

Chris, can you tell me if my 2006 Ford five hundred fwd has rear end fluid/grease that needs changed, or a front wheel differential that needs changed?
I've changed the be oil regularly and Asin 6-speed fluid has been changed.

Is it safe to replace the fluid in a high mileage vehicle? I have a ford explorer with 300000+ miles, I've been told not to change trany fluid but can I change transfer case and rear diff fluid?
