Jump start a Car. Anyone who drives should know how to safely jump start their car because one day your battery will be dead. Whether you left your lights on or your battery goes bad, knowing how to jump your car safely and properly will keep you from getting stranded. What do to if your car wont start

Lol I'm a female with a lot of mechanical experience, and I've had a lot of jobs where I might jump start various types of vehicles more times in one day, than most people do in 5 years.
I was originally taught to clamp to metal on the dead side, just like your video. I never asked why it was done that way, I think I just assumed it was somehow safer or more efficient.
I've had SO MANY PEOPLE go out of their way to correct me usually while lathering on some thick mansplaining, when they see me clamp to metal. WHAT ARE YOU DOING, THAT HAS TO GO ON THE BATTERY
and I'd sit there trying to defend myself, knowing damn well I was doing everything correctly, but never could explain to people WHY I'm right and they're wrong. Nobody took me seriously unless they knew me well enough to know my work history/skill set.
SO MANY TIMES I've just let people butt in and re-do my mistake, hook the shit up WRONG while I stay silent, just because it's easier than trying to argue with a brick wall.
This video has made me feel SO VALIDATED and seeing all the comments from astonished people who always did it the wrong way. its like reading a miniature version of my life.

you're videos are great so don't get me wrong but id like to inform you as well of a few things;
if you keep the good battery car off while you connect and then start it first, you put double the load onto the good battery, it essentially is just something you could avoid even though you can still achieve the jump start. if you start the good car first and then connect you don't risk the shake the engine could have moving the cables.
also that smaller cable you said could burn the wire isn't really the case, the current wouldnt only go through that wire, it would also go through the bolt, although that bolt was oxidized so i wouldn't have used that spot either, on top of the bolt being too small. but lets say its a clean big bolt with that small wire, it wouldn't melt.
also ideally you have 2 people, and when the dead car starts both people turn on the headlights and fans quickly and then step out and disconnect the negatives before the positives, to cut out excessive power on both vehicles, 14. 7 on both has over amperage affects on the voltage regulator in the alternater

Not sure if this is just an etiquette thing but I was always taught to take the battery terminals off from the battery that was good before this jump process. Maybe it was because if something happened and they touched you would protect their battery since they usually offered up a good battery from their working vehicle?
Please let me know what you think as I know as long as you don't accidentally connect those cables it doesn't matter but in my experience I whenever I had a dead battery and asked for a jump I always disconnected theirs first for 2 reasons.
1. They can leave sooner, since I stopped them.
2. I like to eliminate every opportunity for mishaps because if I kill my battery it was on me so I disconnected last.

VERY VERY HELPFUL! My son's friend left his headlights on all night! My husband wasn't home and my two sons and their friends didn't know how to jump start the car so I looked in my van and found the jumper cables and I went on You Tube and punched in how to jump start a car and yours was the first one to come up. It was my first time doing this and I LOVED LOVED how you explained EVERY step and the tips you added were helpful and good to know! THANK YOU THANK YOU! I HOPE YOU KNOW HOW AWESOME YOU ARE!

so I've tried to do this properly with the final negative clamp on a grounding Point under the engine about 20 times in my life. It NEVER EVER WORKS! I always have to go to the negative terminal of the battery and that works 100% of the time assuming that there is no deeper problem like a completely dead battery or a bad starter. I just want people watching this video to realize that they can't count on that non battery post grounding point to work every time

one time when I was stuck with a dead battery, the guy helping noticed the battery terminals had some corrosion on it, its like a white powdery substance, it was preventing a solid connection with the Battery Cable clamp. Lucky he had a wire brush with a wood handle. He scraped the white stuff off the terminal posts and then we were able to get the car started. Just wanted to mention for others in case they notice this when jump starting the car.

So 4 years after the comment below: I agree w/her: GREAT explanation! I thought it was time I learned to do it, after watching SOOOO many males always help me (well ast least I've always had the cables) I thought, It can't take ROCKET SCIENCE to do this! So thank you, ChrisFix! R in Minneapolis, where we have a cold climate, so this is something of interest to us up here in MN. You're the Best! : )

IT WORKED! Before watching this video I had hooked the negative cable to the negative dead battery post and my car didn't start. Then I came onto YouTube and clicked on this video, and you told me to put the negative jumper cable on a negative electrical metal so i did put it on the dead bolt like you did in this video AND MY CAR STARTED! THANK YOU!

this video DID taught me how to properly jump my car. for the 4th time now.
everybody thinks I am smart but I beg do differ. especially anything with the electricity involved. only smartness involved here is having a magnificent source named ChrisFix.
thank you

And if the dead car doesn't have a surge protector, as in some older cars, you blow the computer.
A car without surge protector. Disconnect battery cables and recharge battery.
I'm talking from personal experience as a mechanic.
