I always thought the global standard for measuring power to weight ratio was bhp/ton. That's why it's power/weight ratio.
Top Gear used to spew out power to weight ratio numbers everytime they compared something to the veyron, somehow I just remember hearing Clarkson's voice going on about 500 bhp/ton, Caterhams and whatever.
