Got to highly disagree with Doug that the Allante has good styling. This car has no styling at all. It's a bar of soap for crying out loud! Every single feature is a square or rectangle. This vehicle could have been designed by a six year old kid. I kind of suspect that it was. The Pininfarina people probably submitted this to the GM exec's as a joke and are probably still laughing today that they went for it. I was around when the Allante was a new car. It was uninspiring then and less now. It looks like a Cimarron. I know that the 1980's styling was boxy and boring across all manufacturers. But the Allante is probably one of the most egregious examples of it. I think it's pretty ironic that the involvement of Pininfarina is what made it so RIDICULOUSLY expensive, yet the Allante has got to be in a top ten of vehicles with no styling cues at all. But what else should we expect from GM circa the 1980's.

Chrysler also did a similar experiment with the Chrysler TC by Maserati. A front wheel drive, boxy looking 80s car with the body and some other components developed and made in Italy, but with the platform and the final manufacturing be done in America. But, while the Allante did get the powertrain it deserved, the TC never really did, and was even more of a failure than the Allante. Also, the TC was competing with the LeBaron convertible, within the same brand, which didn't help matters either.

You were amused that they had to indicate that it was the Drivers Information Center. This was pretty typical of that era as manufactures really went out of their way to show any kind of cutting edge technology. Look at some old CD players. they must had mentioned that they were Digital at least five times. Usually in large, bold letters.

It's not a second function for a tape player button. The buttons were labelled with both systems in mind, then the buttons were connected to both controllers, and the device programmed for the signal from that buttons. Controllers like that are a part of those functions the information center checks, when you first start the car.

Since the button to toggle between imperial and metric says English // Metric - are the gallons displayed given in the English imperial system (1gal 4. 5 litres) or the US imperial system (1gal 3. 8 litres?
I feel like since this is an American car, use of the US gallon makes more sense, but the button says English//Metric.

I am sorry but the R129 SL was hundreds of miles away in every aspect. Any one that bought an Allante instead of a SL, did not knew better.
Allante, misspelled, could mean in Spanish 'in front' I guess: because of the front wheel drive? Something to brag about. Oh god what a c ck up as a product.

I'm sorry. That roof is neither complicated, nor cumbersome. People are just less intelligent, and lazier, than people were back then. I was a teenager when these were common, and that top took 10 seconds to put down, and it wasn't the least bit difficult.

Caddy of that era? They still do it, the ct6 blackwing was dead even when it went on sale I'm not a fan of the looks and they spent all that money on it being designed and made by Pininfarina then they made it fwd. lawl

The Allante was my dream car in the early 90s. Cadillacs (and most other models) of that era were big square shoe boxes. The Allante looked futuristic in comparison, although by today's standards it's very boxy.

Video doesn't do that car justice. White Allante's are actually really. impressive, in person. You walk up to that car, and the first thing you think, even today, is man this car us nice.
