This line belongs to the first that the Swiss Central Railway decided to build beginning in 1853, in an effort to connect the 3 major Swiss German speaking cities of Switzerland, Basel, Zrich and Bern. Until the opening of the Hauenstein Base Tunnel, this was the main line between Basel and Olten and was originally double tracked as can be seen by the width of the bridges and tunnels. In 1938, the line was reduced to a single track line. Today it is mainly used by regional trains, occasional freight trains and passenger trains when track maintenance is being performed in the Hauenstein Basel Tunnel. The steep gradients equivalent to those of the Ltschberg and Gotthard passes limit the weight of trains that may be pulled without a bank locomotive. I don't know why, but I find it curious. I can see the traffic driving on the right, but the railways appear to have remained stubbornly on the left. Now I'm going to have to watch other vids from around the world to see if there's anywhere else like this. :)

The old Hasler speed recorder, that's a nostalgic sound, I suppose all Re 4/4s used to have them but you don't seem to find them so often now. That's a very nice trip, I do like these less often seen scenic byways.

So they substituted a more powerful hamster at the last stop! 17' or so into the video. I love it and if you find my silly comments offensive, go ahead and delete them. I have no objections! That constant clicking is a (bit) annoying?

I'm hoping the tachograph is only that loud because the camera is sitting atop the instrument panel. If it was that loud all the time, I'd be talking to the Swiss equivalent of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers about it.

2. 4km straight tunnel without lining in places, by hand, by Italians, 1853 Wow. Is this route used by steam specials? Its an impressive climb back from Sissach to the tunnel. And a vintage train in the works.

Awesome! Our first school accident lesson when this tunnel was built. And still good as new. Actually the lane was dual track but the tunnels not high enough for electric wires!

Great video and beautifull country!
At about 10: 00 is that doors at the entrance of the tunnels?
What for, to stop animals that might go thru?
Thanks.

Those clicking sounds make me think of a mouse wearing high heels running around an exercise wheel! Other than that -- another very charming video! Danke sehr!
