we look at one of Switzerland's most beautiful and unique railways, the Unesco heritage listed Berninabahn - this time in the opposite direction. The next video on this line will be with deep snow in 4K, so stay tuned. The Bernina railway sets a few records, including being the highest railway alpine crossing in Europe (2253m, the highest adhesion railway of the continent, the open air railway with the greatest height difference (1824m) and furthermore one of the steepest adhesion railways (conventional railway without cogs) worldwide, with gradients of up to 7%. A unique aspect of Switzerland's narrow gauge mountain railways is the mixing of passenger and freight wagons in a single train, with wagons often added or removed at intermediate stops with shunting locomotives. On the Bernina line, the cargo mostly consists of wood on stake cars and derivatives of oil in tank cars. Our train today has 3 empty stake cars to the rear, which you will see in the rear view camera along the way. Due to the late afternoon, the sun is mostly behind the mountains, leaving us without direct sunlight. However, this trip will be recorded again in different conditions and in 4K60p in the future. Please note is the position of the microphone to avoid conversations being recorded - it is on the opposite cab of our multiple unit. You will be hearing some eerie and for some people, funny creaking sounds along the way - this comes from the couplings and the buffer when push or pull forces are applied during the trip. The sounds are completely normal and exist everywhere where UIC couplings are in place. Grease and oil are not to be applied on the hook and chain. At this point, I would like to thank Paolo for making this video possible and providing a great deal of information included in the video. His channel: Any questions concerning the trip and the line will gladly be answered by him. Stay tuned for further RhB videos in 4K. If you'd like to donate, please click the following link. Videos are also available for purchase at a higher bitrate than that of youtube. Thanks for watching and have a great day!

We were lucky enough to do this trip in September 2018. An amazing experience the memories of which were enhanced by the cab view of this video. The scenery is so beautiful, and the railway so sensitively placed in it, that it almost looks as if a team of landscape gardeners have tended every inch of the journey. Even the overhead electric is so slender it fits in with the surroundings. I'm guessing this runs at a much lower voltage to achieve this, despite the power the trains obviously use on the gradients. Does the train have regenerative braking, so a downwards headed train can feed power to an upwards train?
I could go on but I will simply say a huge thank you for posting this beautiful video.

8: 48 if you look just to left about mid way up, the shed post has border cameras on the Swiss side on the tracks. There are 3 cameras, 1 looking up the tracks, 1 looking down the tracks and the full 360 camera dome. Just past that at teh end of the shed there is another border camera partially hidden by the red leaf tree.

This is beautiful. I would recommend keeping the video recording at 30fps rather than 50 or 60. The subject matter of a train ride is smooth enough and a lower framerate will feel more natural to the viewer.

Every time I watch this video (maybe once a fortnight, I immediately have yet another re-creation of this journey on Train Sim.
I swear half your views on this video are me!

You always know where you are when there's mountains around. I live in the Netherlands, we have no mountains and it SUCKS lol. Thanks for your videos man, they're therapeutic.

I am sure that this fantastic railway must cost a lot to maintain and operate. Does it have sufficient freight and passenger utilization to pay its way?

Nature and music together. a feeling that can not be described, even with imagination, it takes you to the world of magic and beauty

If this was rear view, shouldn't the train be going the opposite direction instead of forward? I'm so confused.

Is that the articulation accordion squeaking like that? That's not wheel flange noise. Sounds like a trumpet: O

Absolutely beautiful country. Got to ride on this train, I will bring some WD40 for that nasty squeak.
