Today we're looking at a special railway, the 750mm narrow gauge Waldenburg railway, which is the last of it's kind in Switzerland that is operational. The only other operational railway with the same gauge is the Marzilibahn, that is however a funicular. The story of its conception is an interesting read on wikipedia (at least the German version. Originally a railway was to be constructed via Bubendorf - Reigoldswil with a possible connection to Balsthal with a tunnel. The construction of the tunnel actually started at the end of the 19th century and was stopped due to a lack of expertise. Finally the track was planned via Holstein with its terminus in Waldenburg. The reason I wanted to document this track, is due to the fact that it will be converted to a 1000m gauge railway in the following years and operated by BLT (Basel Land tram, the company with the yellow trams in Basel. There are talks of making it fully automated. The will then become a historic video of what once was

Lovely pleasant ride through small towns & villagers, but the end is coming for this 750mm gauge line before its conversion to a 1000mm and larger trains. I wonder if the neighbours to the line will appreciate more noise and the closeness of the trains to their properties is going to be?

lovely unique railway. Pity there are no shots of the cracking steam loco it has. At least the line will continue as a metre gauge one. So many lines in the UK went in the 1960's, we have nothing like this.

Really interesting to see what seems to be a tram sytle signalling system in use on what is sort of an interubran railway. Just amazing really. The Swiss know how to do public transport.

A very pleasant ride.
The track bed does look as though it was built somewhat in the expectation that it would one day be widened to a Metre gauge track?

1: 12 Wow those truck drivers know how to stay information in Switzerland. :) and that last one looked as if it had some kind of stealth technology.

Look at 4: 15 the minute you can see the tracks for the train from the left. Why doesn't the right train with a camera crash when it passes?

12: 40 Who needs automation? Already timed the meet perfectly. Followed by a motorcycle club, apparently.

Such a beautiful route. Thankfully no graffiti. Hope the existing set up is retained as a Heritage Line.
