In this video we have something special - snow in the Swiss plateau, which these days is unfortunately no longer that common. Even less common is that it snows there this late in the season (technically early spring. We're travelling on an InterRegio branded train from Bern to Olten, which takes the original route, now mainly used for freight traffic heading to and from the Ltschberg. To contrast the snow and fog, I decided to start the video with a sunny recording of the same section from the recent Geneva - Lucerne video. After the 5 minute mark, your view will be hampered by fog and the beautiful colours replaced by white until we reach Olten. Links during the video: - Continue watching the sunny video from the start, including the high speed line Mattstetten - Rothrist: - In Wankdorf, continue in direction Thun through to Brig: - In Langenthal, travel the Line Luzern - Wohlhusen - Langenthal: There are videos heading in all directions from Olten to be found in my cab ride playlist. These conditions give one a true appreciation for in-cab signals when such are available. Engineers really need to keep alert when operating with this limited visibility.
Regarding the wayside speed limit signage: my understanding is that the passenger train number is on top while the bottom number is for freights. Do I have this backwards? Over the past few videos it seems the larger number is always on the bottom, and my thinking is freight trains (due to their higher tonnage impacting stopping distance) would have a lower top speed.
Thanks for the posting, lorirocks.

7: 04 But doesn't it make sense to get your passengers to their destination as quickly as (safely) possible? Or are the passengers told on their ticket a travel time variance (min/max) and they mostly don't care? Also these appear to be busy lines so moving quicker through the system allows more trains on the same line wouldn't it?

Well that was a challenge to see ahead. When the time table is 'generous' is there a cumulative 'bonus' for efficiency, minimum power and brake usage and exact time keeping?

An interesting travel in the zentral Schweiz with snow and fog. And with the name of the majority of the stations crossed. Congratulations.

Thank you. this must be the best way to travel through the snow and fog! Best wishes from Lola and Andre Engelbrecht in South Africa.
