the view normally reserved for the driver as we travel over the first mountain railway in Europe to employ standard gauge track. The railway was constructed between 1848 and 1854 by some 20, 000 workers featuring 14 tunnels (among them the 1, 431 m summit tunnel, 16 viaducts (several two-storey, along with numerous attractive stone bridges. Our train has to tackle 2. 5% gradients and negotiate curves as tight as 190m radius, a real challenge for any train. The railway is so remarkable that it has been added to the list of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. Please sit back and join me for a ride over this highly scenic Alpine railway. The tour was organised by the Railway Touring Company

Hello Tim, my first time I watched the -Semmering- via cabin ride trip. Thanks a lot. :) All in all the line looks harmless but isn't. Its brilliant architect, Carl von Ghega, studied railway engineering in England and USA, too. With the knowledge acquired he got task to plan railway about Semmering as part of magistrale Graz-Triest. (Carl von Ghega was said to -see- the railroad lines in the area)
Recently I watched tv report about Grand Hotels that were built on the railroad, like here and Switzerland, and how they are run these days: just -wellness-! Guests stay briefly in the hotel (3/4 days) and only watch the great scenery through windows. Not a step outside the door! Some empires also have their apartments in the hotel. With a huge heated pool, of course. At least they get some fresh air, which must be very refreshing, otherwise there would be no -Spital am Semmering- station ('hospital at Semmering'. Which indicates an air resort. - Heinz

A wonderful video and railway. I've never been over the Semmering but it is definitely on my bucket list. I do hope the old line stays open although it will not be the same; I went over the Gotthard a few months after the base tunnel opened and I don't think I saw a train other than the one I was on, not at all like the old days. Still better than the tunnel though; that is just boring.
I was quite surprised when our train switched to the left hand track for most of its journey. I thought that Austria was like Germany (but unlike France or Switzerland) in that the norm was for trains to run on the right. Obviously rail isn't quite like road, and bi-directional and/or wrong-side running happens more or less everywhere, but it definitely seemed as if that was the expected side over the Semmering. Does anybody know why.

Austria is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe. You all have well preserved forests, mountain streams. Both sides are natural. Peaceful, pure, shady, clean, pleasant to live. My country -Thailand- also has the beauty of a beautiful tropical country. There are a lot of forests, the sea, the mountains, the bright sunlight. But Thai people have bad habits. Not care for nature They like to destroy trees, streams, wildlife. They also lack discipline. Lawless Very disappointing.

Hello Tim, wery beatiful pleace for path of this railway, modern european train, but september' weather was badly, at the end are rainy too. This year is absolutely anomal for world climate, and fals down climate completly. On Europe, Japan and just in Southern Mediterranean was humid, cloudy and rainy above all previous climate standards. Take care and look after yourself. Best wishes. Chuck

What a wind-up, thought was watching a virtual train trip everything was just so damned perfect and not a human in sight until a long way in! Then made mad because everything was so perfect yet the UK is a tip compared and why when it is in the top 6 of wealthiest countries! Who is ripping us off when Austrians seem so content! Otherwise, truly excellent video, thank you.

That is an amazing Video Tim. The first one I have seen, (and it won't be the last. I was in Austria several years ago and it is on my list of favourite countries. I am always impressed by the European Railway network because the trains are fast, smooth and comfortable. Sign me up, I want to see more.

. in April of 19874 I took the train from Vienna to Semmering to visit my cousin, Fr Walter Mickle CP, at the monastery of Maria Schutz. the last leg of travel was at night so I missed this. but DID record on film some of the views on my trip back to my barracks at Illesheim, Germany. thanks.

All the deserted looking buildings on the side of the tracks, obviously must belong to the railroad. Are they now abandoned? What is going to happen to them? They are beautiful home-like rectangles and look very strongly built, although they are old. Would be a shame to destroy them.

What an awesome ride through Austria Tim. The video's quality was fantastic. I actually felt that I was travelling through the mountains itself. Good job Tim. Wish you a Merry Xmas and Happy New Year 2020. Good luck to your upcoming videos for the new year.

Were, or are the houses, situated so close to the right-of-way railroad property sold to individuals or housing for railroad employees? I am curious because in the U. S. most railroads own the land fifty feet on each side of the R-o-W.

I love taking these -virtual- train rides through such breathtaking terrain. Definitely makes me want to ride these rails for real someday, once travelling abroad becomes feasible again.

Nice Video, thanks! Why are they driving here on the lefthand side? It seems strange to me, because this is Austria not Switzerland.
