Hello folks, Welcome to this trip report bound to Paris, the most beautiful city in the world with DB high speed service, the famous ICE. - TRIP INFORMATION - RECORDED IN DECEMBER 2019 Railway company: DB Train type: BR 407 ICE 3 Velaro D Train number: 9574 From: Stuttgart Hbf to Paris-Est Time: 4h22 Price: Around -130 ($150)
Date: 2024-01-09

Comments and reviews: 35

The ICE4 is a fake ICE, DB should have been fair and declare them as new version of the IC instead of a ICE. (IC - Inter City / ICE - Inter City Express)
Worst example Berlin - Hamburg, once as high speed line build, the ICE stops there now at small cities, hence it would be just a acceleration and breaking torture if the trains travels high speed. So they reduced the TOP speed and now they say, if we did not drive the high speed any more, we also dont need a expensive highspeed train. Solution, the fake ICE (ICE4) was developed to replace high speed trains, the tiked prices are still the same or even more expensive.

Good to mention the difference between the two series of ICE3.
Also worth noting: In the latest iteration, the nice lounge behind the driver cab was removed. It was possible to see tracks in front and turn the main lights off in this area. Very handy for sleeping, especially when I took an early morning train from Munich. Vision through the driver compartment can be blocked by the driver himself: by a simple command, the glass wall becomes blurry.
First series of ICE3 also have 6-seat compartments in 1st class. The lounge with front (or back) view is present on the ICE-T trains as well.

To the author: it's not at all ironic that Mercedes-Benz has the rotating logo on top of the train station as only in America Henry Ford distroyed the passenger trains in Michigan and the sorounding states, in other parts of the world the industries worked together in a mix of solutions for all people as they were not only interested in money, like God doesn't provide enough. ;) Other people see other value besides money.
So Bravo Stuttgart, Bravo Mercedes, Bravo Germany, Bravo Europe!

I absolutely agree that the seats on these trains could be better. In fact, VIA Rail Canada uses the same seats that are used in 1st class on these trains in their economy class.
That said, they are still better than the 1st class on ICE 4, which I found absolutely dreadful when on a 5 hour Mannheim to Berlin segment. Thankfully I only paid 64 Euros for a first class Paris to Berlin ticket, so I guess it wasn't all that bad.
I did find the ICE 2 to be quite comfortable though.

In my humble opinion I love all German rail travel whether it-s regional or ice and when my wife and I get the opportunity to visit Germany again I-ll do what I always do and get the 7 day ticket for rail travel in the area I-m visiting this opens up the whole area to explore and in many instances the 7 day ticket is only a few euros more than the return ticket price from the airport to the city you are staying in plus you get tram travel as well

In your summary of criticism of Stuttgart 21 you forgot the most important point: It is a massive reduction in capacity and operational fexibility. We're paying billions to destroy railway capacity and instead we'll get a station that will operate at 100+ percent capacity from day one without any option for increases. It is a real estate first and foremost. The railway network mostly gains a bottleneck.

I like the ICE more than the TGV. I find even the second class much more comfortable (especially the head cushion) and the whole design of the interior is so much more nice and timeless than the TGV. A lot of the TGVs have a very outdated interior design. Also the ICE is more iconic on the outside, because we kept the same timeless design over the years and don-t change it completely every couple of years.

1. Stuttgart 21 is crap. The New station has 4 tracks less than the actual, but it shall transit 2 times more traffic. they need a minimum of 12 tracks to make the -deutschland-takt- possible. 2. Stuttgart 21 is Crap. 3. Stuttgart 21 can be the biggest swimmingpool in germany or the biggest crematory due the tunnels and the anti-flood-system. 4. did I say, that stuttgart 21 is crap?

You get free meals and drinks in the DB Lounge in the major stations, unless you have a -Supersparpreis- ticket which doesn't include Lounge entry.
Also, you can have everything from the Bistro brought to your seat in first class. But you'll still have to pay.
You will get sweets or other small, single-serving snacks for free in first class, though, as well as newspapers.

I remember watching a documentary from HR Fernsehen about the Frankfurt Paris service, and First Class passengers received complimentary food and drink in First Class on that ICE. I wonder if the service was downgraded, or it is only available on the Frankfurt services? Must do this route again at some point; merci! :)
reply

I do agree with you that it is disappointing that food and drink are not included in a first class ticket. Other railways include this.
Also; the lack of meals or even drinks make first class seem to lack value, especially when one considers that 2nd class is perfectly comfortable and much cheaper

The journey would have been -30 minutes faster (3: 50) if the high speed line between Stuttgart and Mannheim wasnt temporarily closed to renew the tracks. The train would normally use it from Stuttgart all the way to the railway junction near Bruchsal (the route shown on the DB Website is false.

Ah, Stuttgart 21, one of the greatest failures of German engineering. Just after BER Airport.
The new underground station is sloped, it is not even categorized as a railroad station by law, because the slope of the whole station is steeper than allowed. It's only a -stop- not a -station-.

I've taken the trip from Paris to Mannheim, DE a lot. Its always cheaper flying into CDG from Dallas, Texas and taking DB than flying into FRA. Interestingly, I've seen the Bundespolizei arrest people everytime. Are TVG trains nicer? I think my family would disown me if I took a french train -.
reply

BR is not an officially classificstion for locomotives and self propelled trains. Thisxakrinym is used by midel railroaders and buffer kissers and another Railfans. DB himself and the politic are not using this akronym for -Baureihe-- in his both papers and files.
- built series.

Regular trip time to Paris is 3h 35min instead of 4h 22min. The reason for the elongated travel time is the renovation of the Stuttgart-Mannheim HSL. This renovation ends on Oct. 31st. Then ICE/TGV trains will head to Karlsruhe with 250 kph again.

Fun fact: After DB noticed, that their new and slow, incredibly energy-efficient ICE 4 is not a solution for high speed transport, they ordered a new generation of substantially faster ICE trains some weeks ago: 30 Siemens Velaro D trains.
reply

Those seats look like a rundown version of the Railjet ones. Austria is lucky in that there are fewer passengers, so the product holds up better overtime. Also those headrests on ICE trains in first always look so droopy and tired.
reply

Could top speeds in Germany be restricted by outdated infrastructure? Because that is a major issue on British railways, where the infrastructure dates back to the mid-19th century and the trains can't travel faster than 200km/h as a result
reply

Nice Video, but be careful: At 11: 20 you noticed, that the ICE 4 is also designed for a topspeed of 320km/h. That is wrong. The ICE 4 only reaches 250km(h (it is planned to add another powercar to increase to 265 km/h)
reply

You should look into the -Sparpreis- (saver price in English) section on DB website.
I-ve manage to get some first class tickets for less than 50-, but you have to book in advance.
It-s worth to look into it.

Never travelled in ICE train. though I have travelled in other type of trains to Cologne, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt few times. The train is crowded, if the video was made in september 2020 during this Corona times!
reply

I noticed that the engine or lead car is very filthy. Why cannot they have someone at the station clean the front of bugs and detritus? Other countries do. I mean, DPRK have cleaner engines than this.
reply

Have ridden German trains and so much more superior to American trains. Though our local commuter train called Cal is great. Why take 5 hours by car when this train gets you there in 1 hr 50 min almost 2 hours.
reply

Very cool video, thanks a lot!
I know that each seat has a screen which displays when it-s free or not. Do you know if it-s allowed to change seat? I don-t like reverse seats -

reply

Interesting from a US perspective. People poo-poo Amtrak as too slow in the NE corridor, but the Acela business class gives much better seating than Euro 1st class - IMOP.
reply

That's great & all. But have you considered Stuttgart to Paris via Belgium on the Panzer 4. Quite well reviewed & highly rated route some 80 odd years ago.
reply

Fun Fact: The ICE 3 (Velaro D) is also called as ICE3, because the Design of the first ICE 3 had Bombardier and not Siemens, but all other parts ar from Siemens
reply

I have an idea for a trip report, the train from Bergen to Oslo? It's a really scenic ride going from sea level to over 3500 feet above sea level!
reply

These seats look so cheap and people who seat behind you can see everything you do on you're laptop or others. Not very good and very comfi
reply

Reading fast dissapearing subtitles, trying to watch the video and being distracted by other noisy sounds in the video make me totally dizzy.
reply

The Velaro D seems to have design issues with their faucets. It doesn't work if you flush the toilet. Every Velaro D has that problem.
reply

if you buy ticket in advance, you pay 40 Euro/2nd class or 50 Euro/1st class, both incl. seat reservation. Thats not much.
reply

Je ferai ce trajet en novembre prochain et je me demandais justement quel train prendre entre la SNCF et DB. Merci pour ce review!
reply

I'll take this train in two weeks, or actually in the opposite direction. I only paid -50 for a first-class ticket though.
