Guten Tag! Welcome to this trip report onboard the famous German high speed train, the mighty and original ICE 3, these EMU were recently refurbished with new interiors by the DB. Is it worth it? Let me know your thoughts in the comments! - TRIP INFORMATION - RECORDED IN DECEMBER 2019 Railroad company: DB Train type: ICE 3 BR403 From: Munich Hbf to Stuttgart Hbf Time: 2h17 Price: Eur 33, $40
Date: 2024-01-09

Comments and reviews: 35

The new seats are absolutely horrendous. They are rock-hard, the lower back support is in totally the wrong position for anyone of above average height (for reference: I-m 187cm) and the curvature of the seat and narrow head rest make it impossible to sit in any posture other than perfectly upright and facing straight forward (a problem made even worse if you have the audacity to wear headphones. To make matters worse still: the head rest digs in to your shoulders if you-re tall, causing you to hunch forward.
The overall result being back and neck pain as well as a high degree of general discomfort on journeys of any length (I-ve travelled on it for journeys of 1 to 4h.
PS. Depressingly, they have also gotten rid of the six-seat compartments in second class, which were my preferred way of travelling, as they offered an unparalleled level of quietness (or, if you and your fellow travellers were so inclined a good conversation) and if you were lucky and they were empty, turned into a private cabin perfect for relaxing (If so inclined, you could stretch out over the three seats) or getting work done on the big table.

As a DB train attendant, I understand the displeasure with the new seats in the ICE 4 and the redesigned ICE3 trains. However, it has to be said that the capacity increases significantly and that the old vehicles are once again made fit for use for many years. The redesign also includes improved passenger information and more space / options for passengers with restricted mobility. As many commented, the seats are also being revised once again and with the new EC / IC generation -ECx- from Talgo in Spain, different seats and other equipment are being added. -
Finally, a few tips for TripReports in the DB network: -
- InterCity 2 (as Stadler KISS between Dresden and Rostock or as a Bombardier double-decker in southern Germany)-
- ICE trip from Zurich to Frankfurt am Main (ICE 4)-
- ICE Sprinter from Munich to Berlin (ICE 3 in about 4 hours)-
I would also be very happy to receive trip reports from Norway.
In any case, you already have a subscription. Greetings!

I was traveling from Munich to Amsterdam on ICE in late summer 2020. The first leg of the journey was such a train with upgraded seats. Nightmare for a long ride. They now have the same hard seats for the 1st class, with reduced distance in between. I was sooo happy when for the Dutch leg of journey came a good old ICE with previous-gen seats. Nice that NS still uses the old generation of ICE trains, hope they won't upgrade.

nice review!
but: min11sec58 - -privacy for (business) travellers-. some proper curtains towards the corridor used to be standard on European trains for decades.
not just a blocked milk-glass for the driver. a point - I fully understand, although of course a bit sad for interested travellers.
and: min12sec47 - SBB-rolling-stock far a IRE Stuttgart-Karlsruhe? .
keep on travelling - best regards

As you are doing your walk-through of the train at the end of the video your train was descending the Geislinger Steige, a famous railway incline where freight trains are pushed up by banking locos (and passenger trains were in the past) You should have looked outside to enjoy the view as in a few years time the trains will use a tunnel instead.

Surprised you aren-t keen on Munich Station. I was amazed at the ease of finding platforms, the helpfulness of staff including their standard of English, although I did try asking in their language. The catering facilities were second to non and to me infinitely preferable to the cafes in the surrounding streets. A- from me at least.

I think, how a station looks like is rather uninteresting. It may matter if you do a report about munich station. But in this case it would be more interesting to tell facts about the stock, the cleanliness of the train, the appearence of the staff and the pricing in the bistro. All in all it was a good trip report. -

Here, though, I have to say that it's a cultural thing with seat firmness. Germans simply like harder seats better, and on long journeys it's certainly better for the back. -
By the way, you can also see this in cars, French cars are much better padded and super comfortable for short distances but not for long ones.

Greetings from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (The Caribbean. You have such a cool job, entertaining the world, whilst traveling too and from, beautiful destinations at the same time. Love your videos, they always make miss traveling through Europe, keep up the good work, you will have millions of views.

Had to laugh at the can't see inside the drivers compartment. The trains where I live have clear glass into the drivers compartment, but a lot of them tape newspaper over the glass so you can't see it. That troubles me as I always wonder what they are doing in there that they don't want passengers to see.

The ICE 1 is the best! It has the most comfort and is fast as well and faster than the ICE 4. Today-s German trains are designed with a low cost perspective and less passenger space to fit more people inside a train.
The ICE 4 is just like a regional train. The difference is only the speed.

The DB will change soon (i don't know what -soon- means in DB langauge, probably 1 to 10 years) the hard seats. Many passangers are complaining about them, so to stop a turning away from the customers because of the hard seats, they will choose a more softer and probably pricier one.

that see-through glass thing was also on the CRH3C and CRH380BG/BK/BL/CL(both from Siemens Velaro or Velaro derived) but it changed to the non see-though one like the ICE3, and the new CRRC standard EMUs, they just completely removed it, which makes the compartment extra claustrophobic

Immunotherapy has affected my brain in highly specific ways. One of those areas is recognition. I cant tell the difference between most breeds of dogs, between brands of cars. and I cant make out ANY difference betwen anyh of those BRxxx ICE trains. They all look the same to me.

The fact that I always book ICE trains instead of TGV Inoui when travelling between Paris and Stuttgart is because I like it's Bistrol bar and restaurant concept as they are way better than Le Bar onboard TGV Inoui.
Nice video as always. Next: ICE 1 and ICE T please. --

Before the pandemics, I commuted quite often (several times per week) with the ICE3M between Cologne and Brussels.
I hope we will never get these uncomfortable seat on that line.
I tried them once between Frankfurt and Chur. Never again (I hope)

7: 21 I remember that baggage racks really were lacking in the old cabin. In fact, the new seats are harder but I guess you won-t find any high sped service in Europe where you have as mach baggage space as in the redesigned ICE trains.

Post war 1950s/60s German architecture is fascinating. Always reminds me of Kraftwerk boarding at Dusseldorf Hbf.
Yes, concrete is a bit bland, but it's got a life the boring glass and steel blocks of later years don't have.

Two aisle high speed train will be more stable, safely, faster, powerful, capacity in the future design, seat configuration can be: first class 1/2/1, business class 2/2/2, economy class 3/3/3. what do you think!
reply

Hello, I am a driver of these beautiful trains and I found your page coincidentally. To answer your question with the cockpit glas, yes, this can the driver change with a button.

Another great video. I love the sounds of those traction motors as the locomotives accelerate out of the station. Always reminds me of my travels around Austria.
reply

Interesting that you chose to ride this on. not really a high-speed line. I recommend riding the Frankfurt to Cologne line, it feels like a roller coaster!

Ever since I visited and traveled aboard ICE and heard local Germans Pronounce ICE -Etzi- and U Bahn - -Ooh Bahn - I say the same today -
reply

They should have deployed it on the berlin Munich route instead which have high speed lines to amplify its advantage of higher speed.

i psy thst price for 70 mile journey from London Terminals to Herne Bay. To say UK trains are expensive is a understatement
reply

How can anyone dislike Munich HBF? I mean it-s not pretty, but still somehow a nice place to be- otherwise good video
reply

Still don-t enjoy your subtitles don-t track with the video and either too long or short on screen! Thanks for sharing!
reply

Just to let you know: the reason the DB still has catering onboard is because of the delays. Just kiddin' it is nice.
reply

You travelled from a giant construction site (Munich HBf) to the mother of construction sites (Stuttgart 21.
reply

Want to know if a harder seat was easier to maintain since it would be ideal to make high speed more affordable.
reply

This video was of course not uploaded but taped before Corona. Nowhere do I see people with masks. Good old times-

Your comment about the seats (narrow and hard) could also apply to the seats on the new LNER trains (Azumas) in the UK

Excellent video! As always! I have a question: are you going to made a trip report on a high speed train in Morroco?
reply

I abate to say it but despite the kinder geld the German culture is the most anti kid in E. U.
