You had the golden crew with Mama J being your attendant, the Conductors being Claytor, and the now-retired Glass along with Nick at the controls, all of them together is close to 200 years of railroading. I also like how you decided to do your train review on the North Mountain Sub which is known as the roughest section of track for any Amtrak passenger train. If you want to do something unique try the Autumn Color Express (Ex: New River Train) it runs the same route as the Cardinal through the New River Gorge in the peak of fall colors and you will get to ride in private cars that can be a dome or even the private car you saw in Washington.

You've evidently have never experienced or in known about traditional North American trains sleeper accommodations. With private rooms including even railroad-owned -slumber coaches-, riders had their own toilet, which is I for one feel is at least one thing the -New World- has over European accommodations. If the resulting smell is unpleasant, well, that's the fault of the patron, no? Solution? Always bring a deodorizer!
Both Pullman and Budd built them that way. The only exception was the relative ancient -section- accommodation, which had the old fashion heavy brown curtain one sees in old films.

I've ridden on the Cardinal once, as part of an awesome round trip between Anniston, AL, to Chicago through Atlanta and DC and back a different way. Also got to ride on the Capitol Limited and of course the Crescent, my favorite.
You can get to almost anyplace from Chicago except to Atlanta, LOL. But the circle is nice!
I've also taken a trip on the CZ from Denver to SF and back; beautiful scenery. I want to ride the City of New Orleans if Amtrak would restore full dining room service on the eastern long distance trains. Death to the LD trains by a thousand cuts, it seemed (seems) for awhile.

You coulda grabbed some Wild Wings while waiting at Charlottesville at that speed! Literally next door! - I used to work at a summer camp not too far from there and took the train from Lynchburg, VA (since Roanoke didn-t have a station at the time for some reason-even as a railroad capital-so I had an hour drive to there --) I-d also take the Crescent from Lynchburg and pass Charlottesville to Baltimore my first 2 years of college when I went to school in Owings Mills, MD.

Hi Simply Railway
Thankyou so much for showing this great trainjourney - and I am so sorry to see the facemasks. --
And so much looking forward to a new world - again.
Being danish: how much did you pay for this journey?
You know? - that-s part of the danish way to travel-.
Otherwise - it-s just an advertisement and paid from the supplier-. and then: where is objectivety?
Kind regards from DK

i did the Cardinal several years ago from Indianapolis to Newark, NJ. Got me a Viewliner roomette. Fun ride, spectacular views. The only problem was the thermostat in my roomette. it malfunctioned which caused the air conditioner to stay on permanently, and my room got really cold. it was a Viewliner 1 before the 2's were built. Stuff happens.
reply

Good point you make about the roomettes having the beds parallel to the direction of travel, giving you a better night's sleep. Ironically, while the Amtrak bedrooms are more expensive as they're roomier with your own bathroom/shower, the beds are perpendicular to the direction of travel and, at least for me, you don't get to sleep as soundly.
reply

I did the Cardinal around 2005 from Indianapolis to New York. My Viewliner I room was cold because I couldn't adjust the thermostat for the air conditioner. It was broken. However, the views were spectacular, and I dined with total strangers in the dining car, which made the trip more fun. It was my first long distance Amtrak ride.

I didn't realize that we took the Coast Starlight and the California Zephyr in 2018! Dining has changed. I planned a fiends route so that we can visit the last remaining 4 states so that we will have 50 states that we've been in. Didn't want to drive and here is an excuse to burn some time. No rush.

Okay, I have absolutely -_NEVER_- in my entire life seen an Amtrak setup where the P42s are in between train sets (assuming I'm even looking at that correctly) in 7: 20? Wouldn't that be a hazard for engineers who need to see in front of them? Or is there another-nother P42 in the very front we don't see?

30: 25 this is my hometown. I'm doing a trip with my husband and baby in April from Utah. riding the zephyr to Chicago then the cardinal right to my hometown station. I regret never going on the train when I was growing up. also at 30: 48 there's the huge metal watering can everyone usually mentions lol

As someone who suffers from bladder problems the provision of an in-room toilet is a godsend; having to traipse to the toilet five or six times a night is a nightmare. Mind you I'm 89 and live on the eastern side of the Atlantic Ocean so I can only dream of travel on Antrak.
reply

Thankfully the Empire Builder didn't have the toilet in the room feature. That's gross to have a public toilet that close to where you eat and sleep. come to think of it, it's gross even if it's not a public toilet. just a toilet that close is a huge thumbs down for me.

We took the Cardinal westbound out of Washington back in 1999. Full dining car and observation car back the. We had a great time and had so much fun in the observation car, the bartender gratised our drinks. He said he had never laughed that hard on an Amtrak trip.
reply

I just rode the Empire Builder a few days ago and they made us eat with a stranger. The person who sat with us was nice enough but I bought these tickets to have an experience with my daughter not a stranger. A nice stranger, yes, but a stranger none the less.

The subtitles become tiresome and it's hard to see The view that you speak of in the subtitles we're not living in the 40s watching a movie at the theater it's much better if you talk so we can really enjoy what you're talking about I'm a big fan of Amtrak

Fun Fact about Manassas: It was where the First Battle of Bull Run was fought during the American Civil War. It was the first direct battle between the Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War
reply

the new river gorge and the bridge are absolutely incredible. i recommend a visit! also, between there and charleston on a little backroad is a place called cathedral falls which is beautiful!
reply

I just changed my trip to the Cardinal from the Capitol Limited. Sad I won't get to see DC, but if these views are half of what they are on this video I think it will be worth it!
reply

Amtrak Cardinal has 4 Railroad names which is Pennsylvania Railroad, Baltimore and Ohio, Western Maryland and Chesapeake and Ohio. And I saw Chesapeake & Ohio 614 in this video.
reply

I was planning my trip already and then I saw the -dinner-, probably reheated, all wrapped in single use disposable plastic packaging. It-s gross, and a mockery of classy travel.
reply

How the flatware was correctly arranged after luncheon is officially observed and noted(But it really isn't necessary in one's private abode. But it is all for the camera)
reply

The Cardinal actually used to have superliners with an observation car but they removed them because of a major derailment with the auto train destroying many superliners
reply

I went to Thurmond with my dad last year and I crossed the new river gorge bridge! Both are very cool things to see! Cool that you rode under and through them!
reply

The Cardinal doesn't have a viewing car because Amtrak's sightseeing cars are all Superliners & likewise can't fit through Baltimore & NY Penn
reply

The filming was great but the silence drove me crazy and I couldn-t watch the whole thing. I prefer narration with my train videos. Sorry

I love trains. I haven't been on one since the late 70s but I loved it. From Livingston Montana to Seattle Washington. It was wonderful.

-Toilets are inside the rommette-
Then why bother even putting them, if youre traveling with a passenger, best way to take a fat poop or piss

reply

My wife and I went on the Amtrak Silver trains to Florida and they had real dining car food. It was some of the best I've ever had.
reply

I love these grand old railway stations and when you think of all the soldiers who passed through them on the way to WW II, it-s quite humbling
reply

Amtrak is nice BUT to get from Normal IL to Philadelphia. an hour to Chicago. 7 hr wait for Eastbound train. The only bad experience
reply

Thank you for the the beautiful train trip to D. C. very scenic especially from your roomette on the top bunk with a cup of coffee.
reply

Never been to Chicago. seems so big! Spring 2022 will be my first trip there and on to Washington D. C. Thanks for the preview -
reply

The New River Gorge is, in my opinion, the best view from any Amtrak train. And it can only be enjoyed from a train (or river raft LOL.
reply

If two people book a roomette, do they each pay the same price ($371 each) or do they split the price (each paying about $185?
