The local railroad company here, the Puget Sound & Pacific called -the PSAP- has one of their locomotives that has a much different -tune- then we hear from the typical weekly UP garbage train on the Shelton sub or the BNSF units going back and forth on the Elma sub between the Port of Aberdeen and the shared UP - BNSF mainline near Centralia Washington. Not only a different tune but it's considerably louder then any of the others (which I personally like. Next time I'm in Elma near their office maybe I'll stop by and inquire exactly what kind of horns they have on that one locomotive. And I'll bet whomever helps me will know EXACTLY which one I'm talking about.

When I was 18, I worked at a Belt line in Texas. I was a Hostler, and i would bring in trains that out of hours on road crews and leave them at 5 different yards.
I ran MoPac, Mkt, Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, BN, Rock Island units.
With many visits of White KCS Units, Southern Railway High Hoods, and NW and IC G units so I got to hear all the great horns.

Thanks for the information on air horns! I have a better understanding about the differences
between Nathan and Leslie horns. I also know a little more about how they work. As a side note,
I sometimes hear non railfans refer to air horns as -whistles-.

I watch some Norwegian rail video and their horns are truly anemic - a single weak note.
Anyway, I wonder how they could get off-key. I can see how they would get dirty.

Hey Mike. What is your favorite locomotive of all time? Also, what is your favorite locomotive horn?
EDIT: Have you ever been to Chehalis, Washington? Lots of trains there.

I like to put one of those air horns on my car! Nice and loud, with multiple air horns sounding just like a train!
That way people know I mean business! Not for fun.

Thanks for the breakdown of how these train horns work according to manufacture and spec. Just wondering how easy are these to maintain, or change notes?
