Fox and Franz Josef glaciers feature on the -to do- list for many of New Zealand-s South Island visitors. Fox Glacier/Te Moeka o Tuawe is a 13-kilometre-long temperate maritime glacier located on South Island-s West Coast, it was named in 1872 after a visit by the Prime Minister of the day -Sir William Fox-. Today it is also known by its Maori name -Te Moeka o Tuawe-. Fed by four alpine glaciers, Fox Glacier descends 2, 600 metres on its 13 kilometer journey from the Southern Alps towards the coast, after 100 years in retreat, it advanced by up to a metre a week between 1985 and 2009, since then it has been in retreat. In this video we take a helicopter ride up to the ice fields at the head of the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers, for a walk on the hard packed snow, followed by a drive through the temperate rain forests to Hokitika, stopping off along the way to get an impression of how hard life was for the early settlers. Finally we take a look at the quirky drift wood art on Hokitika Beach. Map at

Tim, I am thoroughly enjoying your superb videos of New Zealand. One question! Every video seems to show long 'single track' bridges. Usually there is a road sign indicating which direction has priority. There are no traffic lights. What happens in misty/foggy conditions when drivers cannot see the other end of the bridge?

Wow! It's pretty apparent that Fox Glacier has retreated tremendously. It used to be much longer and hundreds of feet thicker. Thanks for showing us the glacier so completely.

Hi Tim,
Great video and helicopter experience. Very upsetting to see how much the glaciers have receded. Take care, Ted
